Today we’d like to introduce you to Tochi Medinus-Alegbe.

Hi Tochi, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Storytelling has always been at the center of who I am. My passion for writing and sharing stories eventually led me into broadcast journalism and brought me to the United States, where I built a career in television news.

I spent more than 14 years working in broadcast journalism, beginning as a freelance Production Assistant at WLTZ NBC38 in Columbus, Georgia. Over the years, I worked my way up to producing and directing live newscasts at stations including WZDX FOX54, WAFF NBC48, and WSB-TV in Atlanta. Along the way, I produced hundreds of hours of live television and had the privilege of working alongside some of the best journalists in the industry.

While I loved the work, I also experienced the realities of being a Nigerian woman in American newsrooms. I faced moments of doubt, discrimination, and the constant challenge of balancing a demanding career with motherhood. Those experiences strengthened my resilience and ultimately changed the direction of my career.

As the years went by, I became increasingly aware of how rarely the stories of Africans in the diaspora were told from our own perspective. I saw remarkable people making meaningful contributions in healthcare, education, business, public service, and countless other fields, yet those stories often went untold. Rather than waiting for someone else to tell them, I decided to create a platform where we could tell them ourselves.

That decision led to the launch of TMED Media and Tochi Talks Diaspora, a platform where members of the African diaspora share their stories on their own terms while celebrating our culture, heritage, identity, and contributions to society.

Today, my mission is to create meaningful conversations that preserve our stories and amplify our voices. Every guest reminds me why I started this journey. I’m grateful for how far it’s come, and I’m excited about where it’s going next.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. Like many immigrants, I had to prove myself over and over again. Working in television news meant long overnight shifts, high-pressure deadlines, and producing live broadcasts where there was no room for error. At the same time, I was raising a family and trying to find balance in an industry that rarely slows down.

As a Nigerian woman working in the American South, I was often the only African in the newsroom. There were moments when I faced discrimination, stereotypes, and doubts about my abilities. I had to work twice as hard to earn the same level of trust and respect. Those experiences were difficult, but they strengthened my confidence and resilience.

One of the biggest challenges was realizing that many positive stories about Africans and the diaspora were overlooked. I often found myself advocating for stories that reflected our communities in a more accurate and balanced way. When those opportunities were limited, I had a choice: accept it or create something different.

Choosing to build Tochi Talks Diaspora was both exciting and intimidating. Starting a media platform from the ground up comes with financial risks, uncertainty, and the pressure of building an audience from scratch. But every challenge has reinforced why this work matters. It has taught me that persistence, authenticity, and purpose will always outlast obstacles, and that’s the mindset I carry into everything I do.

Tochi Talks Diaspora is a storytelling platform dedicated to amplifying the voices of Africans across the globe. Through honest, in-depth conversations, we celebrate our culture, heritage, identity, and the impact Africans in the diaspora are making in business, healthcare, education, public service, entrepreneurship, the arts, and beyond.

What sets us apart is our commitment to authenticity. We don’t believe anyone can tell our stories better than we can. Every guest is given the space to share their journey in their own words, without being reduced to headlines or stereotypes. Our goal is to preserve these stories, inspire future generations, and help reshape the global narrative about Africans and the diaspora.

Although Tochi Talks Diaspora officially launched in 2026, it has quickly grown into a trusted platform that has featured influential voices from across the diaspora while creating meaningful conversations that resonate with audiences around the world. Seeing people connect with these stories and tell us they finally feel represented has been one of our proudest achievements.

Based in Atlanta and produced by TMED Media, our vision extends beyond a talk show. We are building a global platform that connects Africa and its diaspora through storytelling, meaningful conversations, and collaborations that celebrate who we are and the legacy we are creating.
