Life & Work with Rob Knight of Doraville

Today we’d like to introduce you to Rob Knight.

Hi Rob, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I was a professional tattoo artist in Atlanta for 30 years. During that time, I began to pursue photography as a hobby. I started studying photography seriously in 2000 through classes and workshops, and I eventually sought a photography degree at Gwinnett Tech.
I spent a year in college helping students (and some of the teachers) understand photography and editing. My classes were basically long lectures and demonstrations about topics I already understood. I left school after one year and began teaching photography classes myself.
My hobby took more and more of my time, and I was invited to work for Panasonic as a brand ambassador for their LUMIX cameras. I retired from tattooing in 2013 to be a full-time photographer and educator. My work for Panasonic and eventually Olympus cameras helped me to build a successful photography workshop business, leading photo workshops across the U.S., Costa Rica, Peru, and more.
The Covid pandemic moved all of my teaching online, and I had to find a way to augment my income. I began working for a luxury real estate agent in Buckhead as a photographer and art director. I had the pleasure of photographing some of the most expensive homes in Atlanta, including the highest priced home in Atlanta’s history. My work was featured in the AJC, the Wallstreet Journal, and Forbes.
I left my full-time position in January 2026. My photo workshops are back in full swing, and I am delivering high-quality real estate photography for discerning clients around the city. This year has taken me to Florida, Maine, Nevada, Costa Rica, and Savannah, with fall trips to Route 66 in Arizona and more.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
I was luck to have an established career in tattooing to rely on as I built my photography business, so the transition from tattooing to photography was fairly smooth.
The pandemic was a struggle I was not prepared for. Like millions of people around the world, I had a whole calendar of work cancelled in a matter of weeks. I was reluctant to pivot to a full-time job in real estate, but that experience opened a lot of doors for me.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
When I’m creating photographs for clients, I love the challenge of delivering exactly what the job requires. My personal work involves a lot of nature photography, and I try to include details and personality that are unique to my viewpoint.
As much as I love creating my own art, I believe my “calling” is teaching and helping others explore their creativity.
