Inspiring Conversations with Robyn Groenewald of Bohemian Robsidy cakes & cupcakes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Robyn Groenewald.

Hi Robyn, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
My business grew organically, I started by making cakes for my kids birthdays and slowly it grew as people asked me to make their kids cakes. Eventually after much deliberation. I decided to try and build a business. I went to culinary school to learn more about the business aspects of the culinary industry. Ironic I know, as I hold a business degree, but somehow the culinary business seemed unique. And then Bohemian Robsidy was born.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
I would say juggling the marketing with the doing is always a struggle. But I remember the same struggle even working in a big multinational company, so that makes me feel a little better. Luckily I get a lot of business by word of mouth and I have amazing customers.

As you know, we’re big fans of Bohemian Robsidy cakes & cupcakes. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
I am a cottage food bakery I specialize in custom cakes and cupcakes with hand piped buttercream flowers. I make bouquets of cupcakes that looks like a bouquet of flowers.
I strive to make the flowers look as realistic as possible. I really enjoy working from inspiration sent to me by my customers to make unique custom cakes to match their event.

What has been the most important lesson you’ve learned along your journey?
Being authentic and true to yourself. As a new baker you often lack the confidence to make your own designs and end up copying other peoples work. It’s so freeing when you find the confidence to create from scratch and say NO when customers ask you to copy someone else’s work.
