Today we’d like to introduce you to Benjamin Davidow.

Hi Benjamin, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
My father is a jazz pianist and fusion composer. My mother is a classical pianist. So from a very young age music was the main vein of my life. As I got older I started playing for different bands, writing my own music and eventually started helping others to put their projects together. That’s been my mission ever since. Help as many people as I can make and release their art unapologetically.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Touring and playing music in general can be extremely wearing on the psyche. Not only is it difficult navigating the industry but you also have to have a certain amount of tact and street smarts when working with bar flys. Outside of music I’ve honed that same skill to work with people in a number of entrepreneurial areas.

However, I would say one of the hardest battles is the internal battle. Everyone, especially in this country, distills worth down to the dollar amount and how much time it takes to get that dollar. It’s rare that people talk about what brings them true happiness or what brings meaning into their life.

Music started around a fire – people danced, drummed, sang together as a community. Today it couldn’t be further from the fire. So to maintain the spiritual pursuit you have to have laser focus on why you are doing it and appreciate the odds and ends for what they are, otherwise you’ll burn out before you ever reach the message that was waiting in the fire for you.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
My songs are birthed not only from influences like Radiohead, Wilco and Queens of the Stone Age among many, many others in a wide array of genres but also from my own personal life experiences (owning fatherhood, transmuting grief, traversing political theatre, navigating generational trauma) and travels from around the world. My aim is to pull all of that together in varying fractals and shades where you can appreciate homegrown melodies that are nourished both by the darkness of the soil and the light of the sun. That is why I perform solo and other times with a full band to showcase a range of emotions and spiritual landscapes. The goal is to hold space and presence, playing to a moment as the moment happens while conjuring up songs I may have written in the UK or somewhere deep in the desert like Taos, Sedona, the Negev or Joshua Tree. In doing so I am able to translate those palpable memories into relatable and translatable sound.

Whether you catch me at a larger venue in town or just down the street playing for a yoga class at the community garden you can always count on experiencing a uniquely personalized performance that fits the mood of that exact time and space. When I see and feel listeners engage with the authenticity of that moment, I know I’ve done my job. And I am incredibly grateful to share that with them. That makes me proud.

What were you like growing up?
Growing up I was always a little more of a wall flower. I liked to stand back and observe the room. I am still very much that way but I’ve actively learned to be more outgoing to fit the needs of my artistic and entrepreneurial aspirations. Above all though I have always believed in the power of kindness and to this day if anyone asks if I have any kind of religion, I’d say its simply that – kindness. We all suffer, we all struggle, we all are fighting silent, unseen battles. So why not make someones day a little easier?
