Meet Shameka “Meka” Wilson of Philadelphia

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shameka “Meka” Wilson.

Hi Shameka “Meka”, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I studied photography and videography at the University of Memphis during my undergrad years. After I graduated, I was determined to have a career in the field of photography or videography.

After years of practice, and networking, I landed a role at a news station in Memphis, where I became their first still photojournalist.

That experience in journalism led to more opportunities in the multimedia field and I’m grateful to this day, that I still get to do work that I enjoy.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It has not been a smooth road. There have been jobs that I wasn’t proud to take, simply to make ends meet. Also as a creative, the balance between burnout and determination is ever changing.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a photographer now located in the mid-Atlantic, where I photograph people, nature/wildlife, food, events, pretty much anything.

I’m known for capturing the “essence” in my work and keeping my content as authentic as possible.

I’m definitely most proud of being an exhibited and published photographer, and I’m proud of where I am today in my career.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
In the next 5 years, I don’t see the industry changing much, but I do think we will see some interesting additions to technology, whether it be camera equipment, computers or software.
