Today we’d like to introduce you to Claire Thriffiley.
Hi Claire, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I grew up with an artist in my family, so I was lucky to have access to art and creativity from a young age. I lived in Paris for my junior year of college and had the ability to travel all throughout Europe which was the best art history lesson that I could ever dreamed of. Upon graduation, I was looking for what was next and my interests led me to Sotheby’s Institute of Art in New York where I studied Arts Business and ultimately earned a Master’s degree in the subject. My career path took me in several directions namely fine art insurance and the auction market, but ultimately I ended up where I began working with living artists through a contemporary art gallery. I opened my gallery, Claire Elizabeth Gallery, in 2016 and I have had the honor and privilege of helping build the careers of artists both in Louisiana and throughout the South.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Like most businesses, an art gallery is built upon relationships. I opened my art gallery in my early thirties, so getting my foot into the door was a challenge. I experienced a lot of ageism and sexism too. Now, I’m in my forties and what I have found is strength in working with fellow female small business owners who are also building something from scratch. The relationships that I have built over the years are invaluable to me.
As you know, we’re big fans of Claire Elizabeth Gallery. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
My gallery, Claire Elizabeth Gallery, specializes in showcasing emerging and mid-career artists both locally and throughout the South. I am proud to showcase an artist roster that is over 65% female. Traditionally, the art world has been dominated by men, but it has been wonderful to see that model shift with more female artists represented in galleries as well as more female gallery owners.
Do you have recommendations for books, apps, blogs, etc?
I am a proud alumnus of Sotheby’s Institute of Art and try to take participate in their webinars that touch upon the current art market. I’m also currently taking one of their online courses on Art Marketing, Digital Technology and Communications. I think continuing education, whether formal or informal, is a necessary part of growing and staying on top of art market trends.
