Daily Inspiration: Meet Stan Konter

Today we’d like to introduce you to Stan Konter.

Stan, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
I began magic at a late age. I was a senior at Georgia State University when I found a magic shop and was hooked. I spent 6 months training every day, then graduated and returned to Savannah, GA to pursue a real estate career. During those years I performed for festivals, toy stores, and individual events as time would permit. In 2020 I became semi-retired and moved to Atlanta and reveled in the magic community here, which is diverse and accommodating. In 2021 I went full time as a performing magician specializing in comedy magic for grownups. It has been a very rewarding new career which allows me to interact with my audiences to create a fun and entertaining experience for both of us.

I am pleased to have been awarded the Order of Merlin Excalibur from the International Brotherhood of Magicians, the Georgia Magic Club Circle of Honor, and two-time winner of the Top Dog Competition for the Society of American Magicians.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
When I switched from a hobby magician to a professional, I faced many technical challenges that I did not anticipate. Performing a 45-minute professional show involves equipment like speakers, mixing boards, backgrounds, and tables. Then there is the scripting, music, flow of the show, and interaction with the audience. These are all things I had to learn and perfect. Luckily, I had the help of some full-time professional magician friends to guide me.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As a rule, I only perform for adults, with a clean show. This includes adult birthday parties, clubs and breweries, churches, office parties, and corporate events. Because I have narrowed my audience, I am able to provide a more sophisticated show that is different from what most people think of for a magician.

Are there any books, apps, podcasts or blogs that help you do your best?
I am constantly reading magic books, honing my craft, and going to conventions to keep my show up to date and relevant.
