Meet Famous Umobuarie

Today we’d like to introduce you to Famous Umobuarie.

Hi Famous , can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I am Famous Umobuarie, known professionally as Fame Identity, a contemporary visual artist from Benin City, Nigeria. Drawing became my way of observing and understanding the world around me. I find inspiration in people, my environment, society, and the circumstances that shape our everyday lives.

Over time, I discovered that art could become more than an image, it could become a language. I use the human figure, symbols, texture, and realism to communicate emotions, ideas, and stories that words sometimes struggle to express. Every person I draw carries a story, and every stroke is an attempt to make that story felt.

Working primarily with ballpoint pen, pencil, pastels and acrylic, I am fascinated by how humble materials can create powerful emotional experiences. My practice explores identity, resilience, communication, social realities, and the experiences of people whose voices are often overlooked or suppressed.

My journey has taken me from drawing what I saw to questioning what lies beneath what I see. I want my work to make people pause, feel, think, and connect. For me, art is ultimately about communication and creating a bridge between my experience, the subject, and the person standing in front of the work.
My story is still unfolding, and every new work is another chapter.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all because building a career as an artist in Nigeria has come with challenges, from limited access to resources, exhibition opportunities, and international platforms to the difficulty of sustaining a creative practice while navigating everyday responsibilities.

I have also experienced rejections and uncertainty, but those moments have taught me persistence. Rather than allowing these obstacles to define me, I have used them to refine my voice, experiment with my practice, and keep creating. Each challenge has strengthened my belief that my work has a place beyond my immediate environment.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I am a contemporary visual artist specialising in ballpoint pen, pencil, pastels, and acrylic, focusing on contemporary realism and the human figure. I use people, symbols, textures, and everyday experiences to communicate ideas and emotions related to identity, resilience, society, and the human condition. I am recognised for creating highly detailed, emotionally expressive works where each stroke and texture contribute to the story.

What I am most proud of is developing a visual language that feels truly mine. I don’t simply aim to make an image look realistic; I want the work to feel alive and to convey something beyond initial appearances. My greatest strength lies in transforming ordinary materials and human experiences into works that encourage people to pause, feel, question, and connect.

What sets me apart is my belief that the human figure is not merely something to depict but a powerful means of expression. Every person has a story, and I use my practice to give those stories presence and voice.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
What I like most about the city is its creative energy, diversity, and the way different cultures, people, and ideas come together. As an artist, I’m drawn to places that inspire observation and conversation, and I enjoy discovering how a city expresses its identity through its people, architecture, and everyday life. What I like least is the fast pace and high cost of living, which can sometimes make it difficult to slow down and fully experience the city.
