Inspiring Conversations with Chef Dani Rich of Yum Golden Crumb

Today we’d like to introduce you to Chef Dani Rich.

Chef Dani, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
FAITH FAMILY FOOD

My name is Danielle “Dani” Richardson, Founder and Executive Chef of Yum Golden Crumb—Atlanta’s plant-based morning ritual.

Yum Golden Crumb began with a craving, a gap in the market and a decision to stop waiting for someone else to create what I was looking for.

As a plant-based customer in Atlanta, I repeatedly found myself searching for the kind of breakfast many people take for granted—a warm, comforting Southern biscuit sandwich, a full breakfast platter or a quick early-morning meal that was completely plant-based. I wanted the convenience and familiarity of the places we all grew up knowing, but with food that aligned with the way I eat. Plant-based breakfast options were already limited, and they became even harder to find before sunrise, on Mondays or when you simply wanted something soulful and satisfying without having to sit inside a formal restaurant.

Eventually, I stopped searching and decided to become what I needed.

I had spent years working in the corporate world, including serving in leadership as a field supervisor. Walking away from that stability was not a casual decision. I cashed out my 401(k) and invested it into Yum Golden Crumb. That money represented years of work and security, but I believed deeply enough in this vision to place it behind myself. I put everything I had into the business—my savings, faith, creativity, long nights, early mornings, blood, sweat and tears.

I built Yum Golden Crumb around the item I believed could become our signature: a golden, flaky, scratch-made Southern biscuit. The biscuit is more than bread to me. It represents patience, care, comfort and the belief that plant-based food should never feel like a substitute. It should stand confidently on its own.

From that biscuit, I developed an entirely plant-based breakfast experience featuring jackfruit sausage, plant-based bacon, lion’s mane chik’n and ste’k, JUST Egg, vegan cheese, gravy, crispy hashbrowns, RYZE mushroom coffee—including our new plant-based Pumpkin Spice fall flavor—organic orange juice, fresh lemonade and other familiar morning favorites. Our purpose is not simply to serve “vegan food.” We are creating the comforting breakfast experience people already love, prepared without animal products and served with intention.

Yum Golden Crumb officially entered its operating chapter in 2026 as an online-first breakfast concept. Instead of waiting until I could afford the perfect storefront, I began where I was. I earned my ServSafe Food Protection Manager certification, refined the menu, built our delivery and direct-ordering systems and started serving Atlanta through our Sunrise Drop. We currently operate Thursday through Monday during early-morning hours, baking before much of the city is awake.

The journey has already included test orders, sold-out menu items, catering opportunities, customer tastings and genuine first-bite reactions that confirmed people understood what I was creating. We are now building The Golden Box as a recurring preorder experience and The Golden Table as our corporate, church and event catering division.

Today, Yum Golden Crumb is still growing, learning and proving itself one golden crumb at a time. We are working toward a dedicated pickup kitchen, café residency and eventually a permanent location where Atlanta can fully experience our vision.

Our message is simple: We Rise With the Sun.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
It has not been a smooth road, but I never expected building something meaningful to be easy.

One of my biggest challenges was leaving the security of corporate employment and placing my own retirement savings behind an idea that had not yet been proven. Cashing out my 401(k) meant that every purchase, mistake and decision felt personal. I was not spending money from a large investor or restaurant group. I was spending the security I had built through years of work. That creates a different level of pressure, but it also made me extremely intentional.

As a first-generation restaurant entrepreneur, I also had to learn how much exists beyond cooking good food. I entered this journey knowing how to lead, work hard and create, but I had to teach myself—or find help understanding—food costs, pricing, permits, inventory, delivery platforms, bookkeeping, marketing, packaging, customer acquisition and funding. At times, the hardest part was not knowing what I did not know.

Access to capital has been another major obstacle. Many traditional funding programs want several years of revenue, collateral or a longer operating history. New businesses are often told to establish themselves first, but establishing a food business requires inventory, equipment, packaging, marketing and an approved space. It can feel like being asked to prove what you could accomplish with resources before anyone will help provide those resources.

Operating online-first has allowed me to start, but it also brings challenges. Without a storefront, customers cannot simply see us while driving by, walk inside or smell the biscuits baking. We must create that discovery through social media, word of mouth, delivery platforms and memorable customer experiences. Third-party apps help us reach people, but their fees, delivery limitations and distance restrictions can affect both our margins and the customer experience.

There have also been the everyday realities of running a lean food operation: rising ingredient costs, product availability, early-morning preparation, sold-out items, balancing inventory with unpredictable demand and performing several positions at once. As the founder and executive chef, I may be developing a recipe, purchasing supplies, preparing orders, checking quality, responding to customers and planning the next stage of the business—all within the same day.

What has carried me through is faith, discipline and the response from our customers. Every repeat order, sold-out biscuit, first-bite reaction and message telling us that Atlanta needed this reminds me why I started.

The road has taught me to begin before everything is perfect, ask for help, remain teachable and build with what I have. I am still learning, but I am no longer waiting for permission or perfect circumstances. Every challenge has made the vision clearer and the foundation stronger.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your business?
Yum Golden Crumb is an Atlanta-based, 100% plant-based breakfast concept founded by me, Chef Dani. We specialize in comforting Southern breakfast made entirely without animal products, led by our signature golden, flaky, scratch-made biscuit.

What sets us apart is that we are not trying to convince people to settle for a “vegan version” of breakfast. We are creating food that is soulful, familiar and satisfying enough to stand confidently beside any traditional breakfast restaurant. We want every customer—whether they have been plant-based for years, are simply curious or are ordering breakfast for a mixed group—to feel that nothing is missing.

Our biscuit is the heart of the brand. Each one is made from scratch with intention, patience and care. We serve it in combinations featuring plant-based sausage, bacon, ste’k, JUST Egg, cheese, chik’n, honey butter and gravy. Our broader menu includes plant-based breakfast platters, signature vegan scramblers, crispy hashbrowns, Cinna Vixens, RYZE mushroom coffee—including our new plant-based Pumpkin Spice fall flavor—organic orange juice and fresh flavored lemonades.

Yum Golden Crumb currently serves Atlanta through online ordering, delivery, preorder pickup and catering. Our Sunrise Drop operates during the early-morning hours, Thursday through Monday, serving customers who are often overlooked by traditional plant-based restaurants—early-shift workers, healthcare professionals, travelers, college students, families, churchgoers and anyone searching for a comforting breakfast before much of the city is awake.

We are also developing two signature extensions of the brand. The Golden Box is our preorder breakfast experience, designed for families, Sunday mornings and customers who want to take a complete golden moment home. The Golden Table is our catering division for corporate breakfasts, churches, private brunches, community gatherings, content productions and special events.

I am especially proud that we began building this business before everything was perfect. We did not wait for a permanent storefront to prove that the concept could connect with people. We started out ghost kitchen online, earned customer trust one order at a time and used tastings and first-bite reactions to listen, improve and build community. Seeing customers pause after the first bite, look back at the biscuit and realize that everything is plant-based is one of my favorite parts of this work.

Yum Golden Crumb is more than a vegan restaurant. We are building Atlanta’s plant-based morning ritual around a biscuit people cannot get anywhere else. Our brand stands for faith, family, food, warm hospitality and the belief that mornings deserve to begin with something intentional.

We Rise With the Sun.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
Some of my favorite childhood memories are the family gatherings at my grandparents’ home with my siblings and cousins. Those moments became even more meaningful during my college years in North Carolina, when I practically survived on my Aunt Rhonda’s Southern comfort food.

In our family, food was never just a meal—it was how we gathered, laughed, stayed connected and cared for one another. I have always been deeply family-oriented, and those memories of being surrounded by the people I love will always be among my favorites. They are also part of why Faith, Family and Food remain at the heart of Yum Golden Crumb.
