Today we’d like to introduce you to Brenda Nicole Moorer.
Brenda Nicole, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I’ve spent my life surrounded and nurtured by the arts. Whether I am on the stage or behind the scenes, art has been the ongoing presence and purpose of my life. I began singing professionally at the age of 15 and come from a long line of musicians dating back to the 1940’s. I began acting in high school at Dekalb School of the Arts, and one of my first plays was actually written, directed, and performed alongside Donald Glover. By the time I was a senior in high school, I was singing with some of Atlanta’s best soul and jazz artists and touring plays around the country. I went to Georgia State University, and ultimately majored in arts marketing because I knew I wanted to have the knowledge about getting my art out into the world, and helping my friends get their art into the world. By my junior year in college, I was pregnant and thought I was in love.
I graduated with my baby on my hip and shortly after found myself in a position of being a single mother of two children. Again, the arts supported me and I began using my marketing knowledge to help nonprofit music and theatre venues. Shortly after, I was working full time at the Center for Puppetry Arts and in school for my Masters of Arts Management at SCAD, while managing single motherhood. I graduated with an MA, and was led to New York to be a manager at New York Philharmonic, before moving back to Atlanta and marketing for Kenny Leon’s True Colors Theatre.
In the midst of all those changes, I managed to release two albums, one EP, headline the Next Generation stage at Atlanta Jazz Festival, gain national attention for my music performing with various Grammy award winning artists, and be featured in shows such as “Star”, “Greenleaf”, and working onset for “Being Mary Jane” and “Survivor’s Remorse.” Today, at just over 30 years old, I’m working full time as an artist and continuing to help other nonprofit arts organizations meet the needs of our community. It’s my drive to fulfill my life’s purpose that pushes me every day. I hope that my story inspires others, especially other single mothers, to go for their dreams and live purposefully.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
It’s hard to sum up what I do in one concise sentence. Ultimately, I’m a storyteller … using my art and skills to bring people together and inspire. My craft takes several forms, as I am a singer, songwriter, actress, photographer, and nonprofit arts leader. I used to be very conflicted on who I am, thinking I had to choose one medium. But it’s God who gave me gifts to share with the world; so, I’ve realized that I shouldn’t limit or box myself into one category. I’m a sort of renaissance woman doing my best to bring good to the world. My music is usually positive or uplifting sharing stories of my own life or my friend’s lives. The goal with all my art, and even my arts leadership, is human connectivity and positivity. I hope that people encounter my art and at the very least connect with what I’m trying to say, and at best be inspired themselves.
What do you know now that you wished you had learned earlier?
Oh yes! Don’t be afraid to find yourself, and don’t be discouraged if that takes time. Being an artist is a sensitive and ever evolving state. Set goals and go for them. If there is someone you want to work with, take action and reach out. And, if you need help ask for help. It’s also important to take time and live life because the inspiration comes from life itself.
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
I perform all around the city with my music and tour dates are usually listed on my website www.brendanicolemoorer.com. My photography can be seen at www.brendanicolephotos.com and I participate in exhibitions occasionally as well.
I’m currently undertaking a very ambitious jazz album which needs funding, and would love the support of anyone that is interested in helping! People can support y art by purchasing albums, attending shows, but really by just spreading the word and telling a friend to listen, follow, and like my pages.
