Today we’d like to introduce you to Brynn Casey.
Brynn, we’d love to hear your story and how you got to where you are today both personally and as an artist.
I ALWAYS knew I wanted to be an artist. As cheesy as it sounds, I can never remember a time where my answer to the question “what do you want to be when you grow up?” wasn’t ‘an artist!’ I have had a love for drawing and visual learning since I can remember. I brought this passion into high school with me, which then prepared me for college where I became a drawing and painting major at UGA. It was at UGA where I really learned why I was the type of artist I was, what I was good at, what I was bad at, and how to grow into who I wanted to be. I had a very wonderful professor teach me that failure wasn’t necessarily BAD, it was just a step in the direction of discovering new things. I was (still am) petrified of failure so this was a really monumental lesson I still carry with me today. I began drawing and painting water landscapes in this very class with that same professor, because I had a very deep connection with the imagery of water. I can’t swim, and also the biblical imagery of walking on water was something I really connected with in that time of my life- letting go and really trusting in God’s plan for my life. I spent the rest of my college career honing in on this subject. After graduation, this led me to my apprenticeship as an artist assistant for a fellow artist, where I learned the in’s and outs of business ownership. Upon leaving this position, I was sent off into the world to become my very own business owner, and I’ve never turned back since.
We’d love to hear more about your art. What do you do you do and why and what do you hope others will take away from your work?
I paint and draw water landscape pieces. Oceans, Lakes, etc. whatever you want them to be for yourself. I have a deep connection with the biblical imagery of walking on water and blindly trusting in God’s plans for your life. I paint these landscapes to represent the different seasons we experience in our lives, sometimes turbulent, sometimes peaceful, sometimes hopeful, sometimes ominous, etc. I love to paint oceans not only because they’re pretty, but because they remind me daily to keep my head up and keep taking small steps as I walk on water and trust.
Artists face many challenges, but what do you feel is the most pressing among them?
I find that it is really hard to earn respect as an artist. People just assume all the time that I am a “starving artist” because I chose this lifestyle, and they don’t even give me a chance to prove to them that I am not a part of that status quo. Most people think that it must be impossible to support your family as an artist, but that truly is just not the case. With the right tools, drive, and hard work, it IS possible and I’m living proof!
Do you have any events or exhibitions coming up? Where would one go to see more of your work? How can people support you and your artwork?
You can see my work on my website, www.brynnwcasey.com, where I sell nearly 90% of all of my original pieces. I sometimes show a few pieces elsewhere like at Ponce City Market, or fun shows in Cape Cod, Atlanta, etc., but it is online for the most part. My studio is located in Roswell, GA if anyone wanted to visit!
You can also find me on Instagram at brynnwcasey.art where I post a lot of updates on upcoming painting and product releases, fun images from the studio, etc.
