Today we’d like to introduce you to Gabrielle Amaris Prather.
Hi Gabrielle, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I first discovered my love for art, specifically fashion and design, in my early years. I would play dress-up games online, sew clothes for my dolls, and style my friends’ outfits. Also, my mother influenced my fashion sense through her teachings of color coordination, sewing, and creating an outfit out of bland pieces. Still, I never indulged in the thought of being a creator due to the societal pressures of pursuing “realistic” goals. So I put my creativity aside and went on to get my Bachelor’s degree in Biology at Georgia State University in hopes of becoming a Dermatologist.
In 2020, I came across a post on Instagram that stated, “Your fear of looking stupid is holding you back,” and the quote resonated with me. I wondered if this is what I really wanted or what others expected of me. I kept asking myself, “would it be stupid of me to be a full-time pre-med school student, have a job, and a business.” But I took the risk, maintained my studies, worked part-time, and sold iPhone accessories to invest in my clothing line, Amaris Apparel.
Finding a name for my clothing line was not as easy as many people believe due to “Amaris” being my middle name. But I wanted to use a brand name that was memorable and meaningful. The Hebrew meaning of “Amaris” is promised by God, and I want my customers to know that they are just that. God promises them one life, and I encourage them to stand on their purpose and never let fear hold them back while they are here.
As of lately, I’ve been taking my advice and trying new things. I recently “tapped into” my creative side and started acquiring skills in sketching, creative directing, photography, and modeling while maintaining a good GPA. So, I will continue to pursue both the medical and entertainment field.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Nothing about the road I am on is smooth. I’ve battled with fear and the loss of my sweet grandmother, Betty Prather, but my biggest struggle was learning how to trust God and maintain a positive attitude to move on from it. From there, I no longer allowed grief and fear to stop me from reaching my goals. Instead, I let those two things drive me to want more for myself.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a full-time student who works part-time as a medical screener and runs Amaris Apparel and my photography business on the side. I love the clinical experience that comes with my job and the creative process that comes with owning a clothing line and doing photography. So if I am not studying or at work, then I’m either doing pop-up shops, planning a photoshoot, making hoodies, or modeling. I love what I do and it makes me happy. My brand, Amaris Apparel, sets itself apart from other brands by breaking beauty standards, being inclusive to all shapes and all races, and instilling courage into our customers.
Do you have any advice for those just starting out?
Write down all the things that you want for yourself and the things that you and others convinced yourself that you could not do. And do it! Reaffirm yourself every day that you can do whatever and be whoever you want.
