Check Out Takeshia Hughes’s Story

Today we’d like to introduce you to Takeshia Hughes.

Takeshia Hughes

Hi Takeshia, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I got started in modeling for plus-size Curvy Women. The Group I joined was Curvy Alliance, once known as Curve Appeal, the Macon Georgia Chapter. I also had the opportunity to become a model for Kushions Photography which opened some doors for me to meet other models and further sparked my interest in becoming a boutique owner, which is something I always wanted to do as a child. The experience in modeling Inspired me to start and open my online plus-size clothing boutique, Thic Chic Hustle. I opened Thic Chic Hustle Online Boutique in March of 2019. My motivation to start my business was fueled by building my desire to increase my confidence and self-awareness. While helping other women who look like me do the same by way of embracing body positivity through my brand, fashion, and lifestyle.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
There have been many struggles, such as finding funding for merch and creating social media content so that I can gain followers. Having the right advertisement and networking has been a bit challenging as well, but I still put in the effort to let people know that I am here. I am a self-invested business owner; I have to invest into my small business. If I’m not selling inventory, then I’m not making money with the intent to bring in new inventory. Today, I am currently rebranding. My challenge are trying to stay up to date with the latest fashion trends while still bringing my unique style, THIC CHIC HUSTLE’s Originality. My goal is to promote body positivity in the full-figured community as well as letting all women know that all bodies matter. The Full-figured community is steadily evolving. As a small business owner, I now need a team of passionate individuals who are like-minded, and creative, while having the ability to understand my vision and willing to help take my small business to the next level. I want to become a household brand.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m not just a small online Boutique owner. I have a bachelor’s degree in human services. I am currently completing my master’s in human services; this degree will be completed in the fall of 2024. I currently work in public health as a Health Educator. I work with Mothers and Babies, educating families on maternity and infant mortality. I am a certified postpartum doula, a Mental Health Peer Supporter, Life Coach, and a Mental Health Advocate. This past year, I have had the opportunity to work with local community organizations in Clayton County promoting Mental Health awareness. I received a certification in Community Health Worker through Morehouse School of Medicine recently.

I am most proud of both a personal and professional development goal that I set this year for my career and my small business. I wanted to improve my public speaking; I was booked for five events so far this year. I have had the opportunity to be a guest speaker panelist at each of those events. I also had the opportunity for my small business to be a sponsor of a National Panhellenic award show that included networking, branding, and advertisement.

I am best known for my resilience. I have the ability to bounce back from anything life throws at me. I have overcome many obstacles, one was surviving COVID-19, and lastly losing 158 lbs.

What sets me apart from others is my willingness to want to help others through transparency and my truth. My work ethic, creative gifts, and talents are unique. My confidence, Intellectual curiosity, and most important my communication is a rarity and what sets me aside from others.

What do you like and dislike about the city?
I dislike is the traffic, I have well adjusted. However, I love the fact that there are many opportunities to thrive In the city. One must be willing and able to put in the necessary work. However, the opportunities are readily available to those who want to be successful. I have learned this through trial and error.
