Today, we’d like to introduce you to Tony Pombo.
Hi Tony, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today.
I ended up in Georgia when I decided to get my Master’s in Film from SCAD in Savannah, GA. After graduating, I moved to Atlanta to get a job as a producer and stayed there for about five years. Around 2010, I started filming weddings on the weekends and utilizing film techniques in my films.
Back then, wedding films were not very cinematic and very much of the “your uncle with a Handycam” vibe. My style gained popularity rather quickly and eventually afforded me to quit my job and start my company, Iris Films, to do wedding filmmaking full-time. Over the years, this led to much more work in the event space, not just weddings. I do a lot of celebrity work, amazing corporate gigs, and traveling the world with my camera. It has been quite the ride!
I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Overall, it has been a fairly smooth ride when all’s said and done. It has been stressful, though, sometimes. When we had our first child, we decided that we wanted to have my wife as a stay-at-home mom.
This put a lot of pressure on me to make it all work. But now, we have three kids, my wife is still stay-at-home, and it is working! I think the pressure pushed me to perform and always make it happen!
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Being a successful wedding and event videographer was due to 2 major things in my eyes: always being consistent and having really good people skills. Consistency comes from being on time, working hard on the job, delivering professional edits in a timely manner, and always trying to improve and evolve in my craft.
The people skills part is just as important. Being personable, outgoing, and friendly is key to my success. Especially in the wedding industry, referrals are everything! From fellow videographers, photographers, and planners, you want to be the person they love working with, and they know that if they refer you (which is putting themselves on the line), you will consistently deliver.
Is there something surprising that you feel even people who know you might not know about?
That I am kind of anti-social, lol.
When on the job, I love it and love to socialize, but a lot of the time, I enjoy just being at the house, playing with my kids, and watching films. Trying to get me to go out is kind of tough, haha.
Definitely something I need to work on more!
