Community Highlights: Meet Caroline Gitonga of African Soulfood

Today we’d like to introduce you to Caroline Gitonga

Hi Caroline, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
At African Soulfood, we believe that each of us is uniquely gifted to serve the universe. For me, this gift is cooking—a passion deeply rooted in my upbringing in the Eastern Region of Kenya. Growing up on the fertile slopes of Mt. Kenya, I was inspired by my late mother, who generously prepared nourishing meals for our village, caring for farm workers and those in need with a heart full of compassion. This personal connection to cooking drives the unique perspective and passion behind African Soulfood.

My journey continued in Nairobi, Kenya, where my late husband, Mr. Gitonga, founded a charity with the famous Giraffe Center. We welcomed over 100 street children each Thursday for educational tours in the National Park and beyond. I volunteered to prepare their meals, and seeing their joy from a nourishing meal—often their only one in days—solidified my commitment to service through food. This experience fueled my desire to create a lasting impact, leading me to open a restaurant in Hurlingham, Nairobi, Kenya, where we catered to local schools and participated in significant events like the Rugby Safari Sevens, cooking for thousands of fans. Our dedication to service is at the heart of everything we do, and we value each customer’s experience.

After moving to Mombasa, Kenya, I honed my skills in authentic coastal cuisine. When my family relocated to the USA in the early 2000s, I launched a successful catering business. With a dedicated team, we catered events for up to 1,000 guests, often managing two weddings in a single day.

In the wake of COVID-19, we embraced a new chapter, transitioning from catering to restaurant ownership. With over 15 years of culinary experience, we proudly opened African Soulfood, serving a diverse array of dishes from Nigeria, Senegal, and Kenya. Every dish is crafted from fresh, unprocessed ingredients, utilizing authentic spices and seasonings sourced primarily from Nigeria, Senegal, and Kenya. Our commitment to quality and authenticity ensures that each meal reflects the love and dedication that define our culinary journey.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
At African Soulfood, we are excited to share the rich and diverse flavors of African cuisine with our Marietta community. However, we must navigate several challenges as we continue to embark on this culinary journey. Many potential customers may not be familiar with the variety of dishes and culinary traditions we offer from the three countries. Educating the community about our unique flavors and dishes is essential for attracting a loyal customer base. We aim to create an inviting atmosphere that encourages exploration and appreciation of our cuisine. Hiring and retaining skilled staff who understand African cooking and its cultural nuances can be difficult. Typically, most servers and bartenders who have come to work with us have been students. Navigating schedules has been very difficult. Employee retention is something we are striving towards.
Since we are located in the suburbs, striking a balance between setting prices that reflect the quality and authenticity of our food while remaining competitive in the suburban market is a delicate challenge. We strive to provide exceptional value without compromising the integrity of our dishes. As we all know, the food industry is heavily regulated, and navigating health regulations, permits, and licensing can be complex and time-consuming. We are dedicated to meeting all requirements to ensure our guests a safe and welcoming dining experience. Lastly, we know that the overall economic climate, including inflation and shifts in consumer spending habits, can impact our sales and profitability. As a niche cuisine restaurant, we are doing everything we can to remain adaptable and attentive to these changes, ensuring we can continue to serve our community effectively. We view these challenges as opportunities for growth and connection. We are passionate about bringing the flavors of Africa to Marietta and are committed to overcoming these obstacles with dedication and community support.

We’ve been impressed with African Soulfood, but for folks who might not be as familiar, what can you share with them about what you do and what sets you apart from others?
