Community Highlights: Meet Dean Dulaney of D2 communications LLC

Today we’d like to introduce you to Dean Dulaney.

Hi Dean , thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
Born March 1966 in Mt. ZION, central Illinois, granduated high school 1984 went to Millikin University for 1 year.I worked in a grocery store from jr year high school till 1987, at same time working part time for patrents consyruction company. Then started working for Schur-Tel Communications in Decatur , Ill. as a wire grunt clearing 118.00 for 44 hr week. Basically running phone wire, installing NEC phone systems. Payphones, Zenith this.After 4 years, I movedon for a short stint doing alarm systems, to Traveling the Midwest doing satellite and TV installs for Channel 1 project. When that project was done, I went to work forAT&T equipment selling phone systems as a 100% commission only sales agent. IN winter of 98 I was snowed inside my house for 3 days, said Ive had enough of cold and snow, moved to Atlanta July 1st of 1999. I started working for Nortel Networks at Bell South Call Center in Alpharetta, ga as a Engineer.I trained and supported phone system sales people for 9 states Bell South operated in, as well as designed data networks. When my kothers health worsened and required more time , I Started D2 communications August of 2000 , we did low voltage wiring, and selling Avaya phone systems abd servicing all other manufacturers systems.. Over the years we have added doing data networks, camera systems, door entry, pretty much any thing low voltage. Added VOIP service and equipment, smart home automation. We fluxuated from 5 to 25 employees at any given time. Covid put a major hurtting on us, followed by losing both parents in 2022, followed by a couple health issues. In late 2022 got bit by brown recluse spider landed me in hospital fir 8 days, they almost cut off my left hand, took year to recover, followed my nearly dying from flesh eating bacteria, spent 11 days in hospital, took over 6 months to recover. Since all that I am now in a rebuilding phase, while we add a Agent AI program to the list of stuff we handle. Thought out my career I sm mostky self taught with no schooling. Now here we today excited to see what future brings.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Lots of up and downs , The mortgage boom and crash, the dot Com boom and crash, the lowest being the Obama years which nearly bankrupted me. All and all there have been more good years than bad , ranging from a couplevhindred grand up to nearly a million in sales per year.

Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know?
Presently we still service some traditional key/pbx phine systems as well as Voip equipment and Service. Camera System s, data networks, l9w voltage wiring. Although we will work on pretty much any low voltage equipment. Weather it be older stuff or new high tech equipment and the merging of the 2.We can do it all, Nothing over years iz coukdnt work on ir figure out.If a client needs/wants/has anything , we can do it. I can still win most deal s o go on because i am a working boss than can still out work al9t of guy s half my age. I still do some house remodeling as well as still do all my own car repair. We put together packages yo fit customers needs snd budget.
