Today we’d like to introduce you to Kimberly Knight.
Hi Kimberly , so excited to have you on the platform. So before we get into questions about your work-life, maybe you can bring our readers up to speed on your story and how you got to where you are today?
I’m a Registered Nurse by background with over 20 years of experience in healthcare. I discovered my passion for nursing at the age of thirteen, driven by a desire to ensure others felt seen, heard, and experienced high-quality, person-centered care. This same desire has spilled over into my journey into personal finance and financial counseling. It was through my own experience of wanting to become more financially literate and debt free that I discovered a newfound passion for personal finance.
I remember reviewing my student loans payment history back in 2016 and seeing that, although I had been paying close to $1,000 in payments each month, the difference was only $50.00 month over month. That’s when the lightbulb came on, and I was like, “Ain’t no way I am about to be paying this for decades”. So, I dove deep into trying to better understand the terms, the difference between the principal and interest, and what was eating up my payment every month. From there, I created a 4-year debt free plan for myself and called it my “2020 Vision” plan. I went full speed ahead and created spreadsheets, trackers, you name it. Finally, on April 29, 2020, I submitted my final student loan payment, paying off nearly $90,000. Little did I know that that was just the beginning.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The road has not been smooth, but it has been enlightening and fulfilling. I come from an amazing family and loving parents who, although they didn’t have much in the way of money, taught me what they could and that was to let God direct my path but also work hard and work smart. So, most of my personal finance education, prior to studying to become an Accredited Financial Counselor, had come from trial and error, doing my own research, reading finance books/articles, and following “finance gurus” on social media.
The biggest struggle I encountered was navigating this new territory somewhat alone. I had become the first in my family and friend group to intentionally set out on this debt free and financial wellness journey. I didn’t anticipate the apprehension from others I would receive when I would share my 4-year plan. I was a little taken aback, to say the least. Thankfully, I didn’t let their fears (and sometimes my own) get me off track. Reading the book of Proverbs daily and reciting Proverbs 22:7 definitely kept me grounded.
Another struggle was trying to decipher between fact and fiction when it came to all of the financial information that was out there and finding advice that resonated with me as a Black woman and aligned with my value. I am a firm believer that one size does not, in fact, fit all.
Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about Till & Sow, LLC?
I started Till & Sow, LLC as a way to simply sow into others what I have learned, hence the name. It represents intentional cultivation — preparing the ground, planting wisely, and nurturing what matters so your financial life grows with purpose. I do this through one-on-one financial counseling focused on education, clarity, and actionable steps. Areas of support include:
Budgets & Spending Plans – creating realistic, values-centered budgets and spending plans that supports your daily needs and goals
Debt Management Counseling – building a path toward debt freedom with debt management strategies that make sense for your season of life
Savings & Emergency Fund Building – setting up emergency funds, developing healthy saving habits, and building financial security
What sets Till & Sow apart is, just like with caring for a patient, I use an empathetic and compassionate counseling approach. That starts with listening and acknowledging each person’s unique circumstances and values. I offer an initial free 30-minute consultation where you can share your top money stresses and pain points with me and you can learn more about how I can help. From there, you can choose one of two service options:
Till – a one (1) one-hour financial counseling session that includes an initial financial picture assessment and a customized action plan with tools.
Sow – four (4) one-hour financial counseling sessions over four months that includes everything from the Till service option in addition to accountability and regular check-ins from me and “Ask your counselor” questions answered via email during your four months
So maybe we end on discussing what matters most to you and why?
What matters to me most is helping others achieve lasting financial stability and create a legacy they are proud of without being made to feel guilty or shame. I do not subscribe to the “fix yourself” narratives nor lean on guilt and pressure as most financial programs often do. Through Till & Sow, I focus on change that helps people see themselves as worthy of stability, capable of building wealth, and deserving of a legacy.
