Conversations with the Inspiring Carcy Pittman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carcy Pittman.

Carcy, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
If someone would have told me that I would be a Makeup Artist, I would have laughed at them! Growing up, I was very much “girlie” but makeup wasn’t something that I was into.

Fast forward to 2009, I lived in Santa Monica, California for about eight months & me being from Homestead, Florida the way of life out there was much different from what I used to! The women were made up & dressed very nice & that was for a trip to the grocery store! I met a very nice Makeup Artist there name Stacy & after talking with her I was so intrigued to learn more about makeup!

When I went back home to Florida, I started practicing & playing in makeup & although I wasn’t on Stacy’s level I was determined to get there! At this point, I still had no interest in doing makeup for others I just wanted to do mine perfectly!

During this time of “playing in makeup,” I had many people reaching out to me asking me do I do makeup & would I do their makeup. At this point, I wasn’t confident enough in myself to do makeup for others & I didn’t want anyone to say I “messed up their face” lol, so I dismissed the thought.

In 2013, I decided to take that chance & accept my first client & from that day on, I have been doing makeup ever since! Seeing how good I was at it with no training or schooling I decided to really take it seriously & started my company Glam By DeNeen.

While makeup at this time was more like a side hustle, my actual job was working as a Visual Merchandising Manager for a Clothing Store. I would work there Monday-Friday, 9-5 & would work Friday night- Sunday at a salon doing makeup. Trying to balance being a wife, mother of 3, a full-time employee & an entrepreneur was starting to get stressful especially since my clientele had grown tremendously!

In April of 2017, I took a big leap of faith & resigned from my job to pursue my passion full time! It was one of the best things I’ve ever done, a feeling I can’t explain! I was proud, nervous, excited & scared all at the same time but the support from my husband & my family & my faith in God kept me going!

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It was definitely not a smooth road! There were definitely times when I was spending more than I was making in order to make sure I had everything I needed & more! I definitely didn’t want to half step anything so I made sure I had the best of the best! One thing I wish I would have done when I first started really had a business plan & some type of paper trail to count my gains & my losses. This would have helped me tremendously so I would advise those starting their journey to do so!

What do you do? What do you specialize in?
I am a certified Makeup Artist & Beauty Consultant. I specialize in what I like to call “Makeup Ministry”. I help to enhance the beauty of a person all while getting to know them! What I’m most proud of is the confidence I see in some of my clients when I’m finished with their makeup! Some of them may have walked in with their head down but leave with their head held high smiling from ear to ear! That gives me so much joy on the inside!

What do you feel are the biggest barriers today to female leadership, in your industry or generally?
I would say what used to be a big barrier that has gotten better over the years were Artist not supporting each other. Some artist wouldn’t want to share your work or refer someone to you because they didn’t want to see you doing better than them or they were afraid you would take their client. Unfortunately, we still have some artists out here with that same mentality, but I feel like whatever is meant for you will be!
