Today we’d like to introduce you to Moya Leung.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Moya. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Well, I am a sophomore journalism major at Georgia State University. Since I was a little girl, I knew that the city was exactly where I belong. As a child, I also always admired strong women like my mother, Oprah, Maya Angelou, Tyra Banks. That is exactly what started my self journey to become the best woman I possibly could be. At school, I am the 2018-2019 Miss Black and Gold for the Zeta Mu chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity Inc. This title has helped me become even more confident, and has helped me see and reach my potential in different aspects of my life. In addition to holding this title, I am very interested in business, self growth, fashion, and women empowerment. I believe that it is important for us to know our worth, so that we can do everything possible to reach our potentials. Good business skills, as well as self worth, and empowerment help us to reach these goals, and that’s why I am interested in these things.
Has it been a smooth road?
No, it was not always a smooth road. Like many other women, I suffered from low self-esteem at one point. It’s not easy, but you have to wake up and decide every day that you love the skin your in. No matter what, you are beautiful. Cliche, but true. Some mornings, I still have to tell myself this. Confidence and self-worth can be tricky when our insecurities are constantly fed on social media. Thankfully, we are more powerful than our insecurities. We just have to keep that in mind. Doing a pageant was something completely odd to me. I had never done it before, so it definitely forced me to face every single weakness or insecurity I had, and just overcome it. You really learn so much about yourself when you get out of your comfort zone. So, the advice I would give to young women starting their journey would be to first choose to love yourself. Treat your body/mind/soul well. Second, get out of your comfort zone. Nothing grows in the same spot. In life, we need to constantly move and challenge ourselves. Don’t stay comfortable, the self-growth and love that comes with getting out there is beautiful.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into your business story. Tell us more about the business.
I am known for being the first freshman to win Miss Black and Gold at Georgia State University. I am also a part of the executive board of Her Campus, an online magazine. These titles make me very proud and they set me apart from others. I think these titles really show my determination and values.
For good reason, society often focuses more on the problems rather than the opportunities that exist, because the problems need to be solved. However, we’d probably also benefit from looking for and recognizing the opportunities that women are better positioned to capitalize on. Have you discovered such opportunities?
There are opportunities women are well positioned for. This may sound odd, but I feel like every position needs a strong woman. We’re smart, we can balance, we are changing the workforce and dynamics of life every single day. Just look at the powerful women all around us. We kill it in every aspect of life.
