Conversations with the Inspiring Niesha Gray

Today we’d like to introduce you to Niesha Gray.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Niesha. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
I’m originally from a small town in Mississippi called Aberdeen. Went to college in Hattiesburg, Mississippi at The University of Southern Mississippi and graduated with a Bachelors in Criminal Justice. I have always had a passion for “Help”. After graduating college in December 2011, I moved to Atlanta, Georgia in search of a job in my career with a friend of mine from college. The search wasn’t as easy as I thought, considering I had no work experience as of yet. It wasn’t until February 2014, that I finally got a job in my career as an officer at The Dekalb County Sheriffs Office. As stated before, I’ve always had a passion to help, however, I felt my purpose was not getting fulfilled at the Sheriffs Office and I became very uncomfortable. I couldn’t understand at the time what was going on with me, but I was very unhappy. After talking it over with my husband, February 2018, I resigned from the Sheriffs Office.

I prayed daily, asking God that whatever my purpose was could he reveal it to me. One day, sitting on the couch, I was reading a book by Lisa Nichols that had a forward in it from Steve Harvey. By the end of me reading the forward (not even making it to the actual book yet), my purpose was very clear to me. I was supposed to be speaking to young girls and helping young girls by sharing my story and things I witnessed with them. At that point, I went full force with getting things into motion to make this happen. I called my adviser/mentor and we put our heads together to get my thoughts into action. This is how my mentor organization came about called Girl Talk. God has been ordering my steps ever since.

Has it been a smooth road?
It has not been an easy journey, however, my biggest help has been utilizing the people around me. I was fortunate enough to have family members who were very familiar with mentor organizations and things concerning my business. The best advice I could give is to look at your surroundings because most of what you need is right in your circle. When I learned to open my mouth and ask for help, doors began to open for me.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into Girl Talk story. Tell us more about the business.
I am a Motivational speaker/mentor and my organization Girl Talk is to teach young girls how to respond to situations that come. In life, many things will arise, whether it is in school, relationships, work, etc. However, it is all about how you respond to those things. We serve as role models to these young ladies. We also help them enhance their social skill and emotional well-being. We don’t make decisions for young girls, however, we want them to be able to make conscious decisions on their own.

Do you have a lesson or advice you’d like to share with young women just starting out?
Stay focused and remain humble. Never get to the point where you stop learning or feel that you are accomplished. Continue to grow!
