Conversations with Jabari Osaze

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jabari Osaze.

Hi Jabari, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I started on the photography journey after I decided I did not want to pursue my career choice as a mechanical engineer my junior year at Tennessee State University. It was actually scary at the same time exciting to be starting on a new journey but it was just so late in my college career I didn’t think it was a smart move at the time. But I did it anyway and I actually started off I think, kind of in a good position early in my career. When I started photography, I started with Greek events because I am a member of Omega Psi Phi Fraternity Inc. so I was doing a lot of work for my chapter then I was introduced to promotional videos for companies, other businesses, local businesses and such. Then I end up doing an internship with concrete magazine, which kind of got me more involved in the music scene of Nashville. And that’s kind of what did it for me once I started shooting concerts and get more involved in the music scene that’s when I started getting into music videos, live takes, cover arts and etc. really really, really heavy. Now I have my own live stream battle rap show that I do on Instagram and on YouTube, I have an Interview segment of a show where I interview local rap or R&B artists while I still make cover arts, shoot music videos, and shoot concerts.

I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
The role could’ve been smoother I feel I made it more difficult than it needed to be at times. By that, I mean I would be stressing over things that I feel anybody just getting into any new field/career is supposed to go through and I was making it seem like it was the end of the world. Isa stress about that having the best equipment, not having the best lighting, not having the best camera lenses not having a stabilizer like when I first started, I only had a camera that wasn’t mine it was my prophyte Kenjis canon t6i. I ended up calling my grandma complaining to her about how I try to do other stuff and I didn’t have the money so she bought me a point-and-shoot camera which is also good until I figured out that I can use an iPhone video and shoot 4K and that’s kind of how I started to get around things. I started to do more research on how to pull off a cinematic look with less if that makes sense like I started looking up professionals before me like YC Imaging, Peter McKinnon, Yo Ali, people that we’re doing this way before me for a longer time to figure out how I can kind of keep up without having the same resource or equipment everyone else had. And I was also in school at the time getting my degree in film and television so I was learning all of this at the same time so I just got over the fact that it mattered about the equipment and its actually about the knowledge behind film that I can implement into my product.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
As of now I mainly specialize in creating actual Productions and music videos I made two successful social media TV shows right now one is a live stream battle rap (Off The Dome) that airs on Instagram live and the other one is a interview and live take segment (Reel Talk) that airs on Mondays and Wednesdays every week also. Right now I would say people know me more for real talk and then my music videos now because I’ve been doing them so consistently that they have been kind of outshining everything else I do. Right now I am most proud of myself for not stopping it’s been a lot of times I would rather just be like all right I quit but I haven’t so I’m really proud of my persistence and my perseverance. I’m also proud of this deal I was offered for my two shows can’t talk too much about it but I am proud of it also be on the look out August 1st. What sets me apart from others is kind a hard honestly I don’t know I feel like everybody has something unique about them my uniqueness will probably be my vision being able to hear a song, see it vividly and put a whole story together that’s probably what sets me apart.

Can you talk about how you think about risk?
The money makers are risktakers if you aren’t taking risk you’re not trying to make any money honestly I feel like people that don’t take risk are comfortable with they’re lives and the only people I can see in this world that can be comfortable are millionaires. It’s so easy to be comfortable when everything is already taken care of no mortgage no car no no bills. Until all of that is taken care of point me to the biggest risk because I’m taking it. As of now the only risk I’ve taken is changing my major right before my senior year to a new major that I had no prior knowledge of.
