Today we’d like to introduce you to Johanna Lee.
Hi Johanna, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
Growing up shy and sheltered, fashion had always acted as a channel for me to communicate with others and exhibit individuality. Originally from Chicago, my family and I relocated to South Korea where I was introduced to a whole new realm of perspectives on art and design. Connecting with so many creative individuals who lived unafraid of the impression they left on their conservative communities left me in awe and complete wonder, every day I struggled to identify my identity. Escaping the comfort of my bubble and exploring the infinite ways to approach fashion and establish creative influence not only paved a way for my imagination but solidified my drive and my career goals.
Every leap I had made both academically and for my career has so far supported me in breaking in and finding my place within the industry. Coordinating looks for myself and the people I love not only left me empowered, but left an overwhelming sense of accomplishment and fulfillment. From the start, it has been my passion to aid others in discovering their personal style and delivering a tailored experience for each and every one of them. Today, I work as a style consultant based in Atlanta and continue to further my education in fashion business in hopes of one day launching my own brand, as well as contributing to the growth of sustainable, independently owned brands.
I’m sure you wouldn’t say it’s been obstacle free, but so far would you say the journey have been a fairly smooth road?
As I was online schooled abroad in a foreign country where language barriers were apparent, networking was almost impossible with my anti-social traits. Pushing myself to venture out and find like-minded individuals felt like a task I could never perform. As someone who had dreams of working in fashion entrepreneurship, making connections or even getting hands-on experience was crucial, but it wasn’t something I was capable of doing at the time. Of course, as I found myself making my way back to the United States, cracking out of my shell gradually grew easier, and sparking conversation had never been more enjoyable.
Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I am currently a fashion student working as a digital style/social media consultant. It is my objective to enhance one’s wardrobe and create a space where individuals can express their personal style; to inspire and encourage self-inspiration. Utilizing the tools social media provides, it’s my job to help boost their personal wardrobe and garner the presence they wish to establish on social media.
What matters most to you? Why?
Empowering women. No doubt. Women, specifically women in youth had been my target from the beginning. I grew up a prisoner to insecurity. As I started to find myself, I recognized so many young women around me battled the same, yet they never seemed to overcome their uncertainties.
Working part-time in fashion retail, I watched young women walk in and out of the fitting rooms unpleased not with the clothing, but with the way the clothing looked on their body. These women were heavily influenced by the unattainable beauty standards set by users on social media, and I wanted to empower them to see themselves positively, to flood ’em with confidence.
