Today we’d like to introduce you to Nakeia Homer.
Hi Nakeia, thanks for sharing your story with us. To start, maybe you can tell our readers some of your backstory.
I have been a creative entrepreneur for more than 20 years but the work I am doing now is a full-circle moment.
I didn’t set out to help others heal emotional exhaustion and trauma, had no real goal to be an author, and had no idea I’d be the architect and professor of an executive course at a leading university. I just wanted to heal myself and keep a promise I made to myself at ten years old to break generational patterns. That work of healing myself positioned me to facilitate healing for others. I can effectively teach people how to turn pain into power, tests into testimonies, and opposition into opportunities through self-love, self-care, and self-healing because I did it.
I share that part of my story every chance I get because that process of me becoming the version of myself that I am today is what I have come to define as purpose. Everyone’s core purpose in life is to become who they are meant to be. I am not special; we all are. Each of us has a purpose. Honoring my own purpose has opened doors for me to become an Award-Winning Songwriter, Amazon Best-Selling Author, Speaker, and Well-Being Educator.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
I don’t think there is a smooth road anywhere.
Like driving to your favorite destination, there can be many turns, detours, delays, accidents, and bumps in the road. The goal is to get there intact.
My journey to this season in my life included a traumatic childhood, heartbreak, loss, kidney disease, anxiety, and depression… There has also been a lot of love, laughter, and both personal and professional success. All of it has worked together to get me here.
In terms of my career, not a lot of people in the mental/emotional wellness space look like me. For years, I avoided it because I felt there was no room for me or what I had to teach. I’m a Black woman who isn’t vegan and doesn’t practice or teach yoga. I prefer prayer over meditation. My use of affirmations is different. I am poetic and practical in my approach to emotional healing. I facilitate healing, but I am not a licensed therapist.
I had to learn to carve out a space for myself within the industry so that the people I am called to could still see me. My purpose and calling were too big to continue avoiding.
Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
My personal brand has grown over the years. I was a copywriter and consultant for other creative entrepreneurs, teaching them how to leverage their personal stories in their businesses. Becoming an author in 2020 changed things for me. I am no longer writing copy; I’m writing books.
My first two books, I Hope This Helps and All The Right Pieces were poetry and prose compilations. My third book, and first trade book with a major publisher, is set to be released Fall of 2024. I can’t wait to share the details soon.
In 2021, I founded Heal & Grow Daily, a global private membership community and educational resource for people who want to heal, grow and become the person they are meant to be. For a year, I only accepted 25 members each quarter. Now we are opening the membership to many more! Each month members have exclusive access to daily how-to articles, morning messages, workshops, guest expert interviews, downloadable resources, monthly masterclasses, and one-on-one coaching from me. We cover topics like purpose, boundaries, emotional intelligence, reparenting, healing childhood trauma, codependency, and self-care… It’s been an honor to lead this amazing community of people from around the world.
My monthly masterclass is open to the public as well. I make an announcement about class registration and everyone is welcome to purchase the class and join us on the third Saturday of every month or catch the class via the replay.
What sets me apart from others who are doing the work that I do is my story- and the fact that I am open to sharing it in a very transparent and often vulnerable way. There is nothing more powerful than hearing a “me too” when you are in the process of healing and growing. It allows others to feel seen. It gives hope.
Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
Healing, Boundaries, Self-Care, and Purpose have been trending topics for years now. I love that for us. What used to be a luxury that only those privileged to have access to therapy, coaching, and expensive paid courses is now available in so many other ways.
We will continue to see affordable memberships and classes like mine popping up. More people who look like me will be represented. Modalities outside of therapy sessions will continue to be offered for those who are seeking a new wave of healing facilitation.
Major companies will continue bringing in trainers like me to support their leadership teams and staff in ways that make the workplace better for their mental health.
