Conversations with Shel Levy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shel Levy.

Hi Shel, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
Starting at 16 years old, I was introduced to camera in editing while in my junior year of high school. The love and passion came when I was placed into an editing class due to having too many credits before graduating, from there our first assignment was to shoot and edit a music video and I instantly fell in love with the process. From there I went on to shoot my first concert instead of going to prom and the rest was history.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
It definitely has not been a smooth road, I’ve faced many challenges along the way. the biggest struggle up until recently was being consistent, after covid I dropped out from Georgia State University and lost interest in the art of camera work. However, I still brought my camera with me and filmed other activities I was apart of such as car meets where I would vlog, sneaker shopping and anything else I would do in my day to day. So even though I wasn’t working or getting paid from my camera I still used my camera every other day.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am a cinematographer/ photographer best known for music videos that give a dark gritty yet cinematic feel. I specialize in making artist look more established, serious, and industry ready. Also I thrive in run and gun situations making the best Visuals with Little to no plan while under pressure.

Honestly I’m most proud of building my own lane and brand through my work. Everything I’ve done so far came from me putting in the time, staying consistent, and figuring it out as I go. seeing my Visuals actually elevate artist and knowing people recognize my work is truly what I take pride in.

What was your favorite childhood memory?
I’d say my favorite childhood memory was traveling back and forth from Atlanta to Chicago, all my family is in Chicago so going back to see them was always a highlight every year. And now that I’m older I can party with my older cousins which makes going back even better than when I was a kid.
