Conversations with Taz The Artist

Today we’d like to introduce you to Taz The Artist.

Alright, so thank you so much for sharing your story and insight with our readers. To kick things off, can you tell us a bit about how you got started?
Well, I grew up in a small city in Alabama about 5hrs from Atlanta. I actually was going to become a teacher before I decided to pursue my dream of becoming an established Artist. I attended the University of South Alabama to receive my BFA in painting (which I’m currently working on), started my Tattoo journey in 2018, got my license to tattoo in 2019, and in this year, 2021, I’ve moved permanently to Atlanta, Georgia to work with Miya Bailey as an Artist at City of Ink Social Club located inside Peters Street Station Community Design Center. Very excited for the future and to see where my creativity takes me!

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
The road to success is never completely straight or easy. I’ve definitely dealt with my fair share of racism and sexism being a deeply melanated woman in an industry that is so male-dominated (primarily white male-dominated at that, but I’m so happy this is changing as the industry grows and becomes more diverse). I’ve dealt with the losses of many close friends in focusing on my truth, my goals and my aspirations; as well as having to face days wondering where my next meal was going to come from, but I knew that all my hard work would pay off for me to live my dreams and ultimately, I went from having nothing but a vision to making six figures in less than two years time. So Grateful and this is only the beginning! I can’t even begin to explain how excited I am for the future.

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
I practice a wide spectrum of mediums, but I primarily specialize in Tattoo Artistry and Oil Painting. I currently am a part of an amazing collective of artists at Peters Street Station which is a safe space for artists to practice all mediums of art from tattooing to painting, sculpting, music, graphics, everything. Here you can find me primarily tattooing, but I’m always working on a piece (painting) in my spare time. I am equally proud of all of my gifts but I’d have to say my tattoo skill and overall eye for design and composition definitely set me apart from my peers. In booking a session with me, I try to not only leave each client with an excellent piece that fits both their personality and their story but also an excellent experience to hold with that piece forever.

Can you talk to us a bit about happiness and what makes you happy?
Happiness. So many things bring me happiness. Even when things aren’t looking bright there is always something to smile about and just that fact alone brings me happiness. I think as humans in 2021, depression and anxiety have a very tight hold on a lot of my peers but when you appreciate the little things and not get caught up on “human sh*t” like bills, work, what people think of you, etc; is when you can truly have a blissful life. A smile, sweet fragrances, beautiful skies, personal and financial freedom, inner peace and wholeness, having genuine people that love and support you in your corner, and really good food. These are some of the very small yet very big things that make me happy.
