Daily Inspiration: Meet Jennifer Norman

Today we’d like to introduce you to Jennifer Norman.

Jennifer, we appreciate you taking the time to share your story with us today. Where does your story begin?
My photography career started unexpectedly. I wasn’t someone who “grew up with a camera in their hands” and I certainly didn’t think I would be in this business now for 17 years. I started out in college with the intentions of getting a degree in Childhood Education, but decided on a business degree.
I began interning for photography studios that did sports and learned my camera inside and out. It wasn’t nearly as professional as what I have now, but still fun. I did some contract jobs for a wedding photography company, did my cousin’s wedding, and came to the realization that I really loved photographing weddings.
17 years ago I had my first paid wedding. That couple since then has a family and comes to me at least once a year for their photos to be done. Nine times out of 10 my couples always come back. Whether they are celebrating an anniversary or starting a family of their own, I get the honor of photographing them time and time again. Without my clients, I would not have the community, friendships, and support needed to be in business this long.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Running any small business is not an easy road. There are so many learning experiences, even today, that I have encountered. I think one of the most challenging things to happen is when business is slow. It’s having to come up with other strategies and marketing tasks to further your business to stay on top.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am a wedding and portrait photographer focusing on the most special moments a person can experience. At the root of it, I specialize in weddings. I am also a lifestyle newborn and family photographer.
I am most proud of the way I have been hired as a wedding photographer for multiple couples in one family or friends group. I once had a wedding booked and then her sister booked me for her wedding and then her cousin booked me for hers and so on.
One of my favorite phrases I hear a lot is, “you’re our photographer for life.” It’s an honor every time.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
I hear a lot about how the photographer community is full and while they may be right, every photographer and artist is different. So different that there are enough clients in the world to book you. Your ideal client is out there you just have to be patient. Keep working and learning at your craft.
