Olive Capri

Hi Olive, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start, maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers.
Growing up in Louisiana, dancing was woven into the fabric of my culture. I thrived on the rhythms of the South, eventually joining the Elite Dance Line in Lake Charles. But as life evolved, so did my passions. I stepped away from dance line, only to rediscover my love for movement in the form of line dancing as an adult.

Then, one fateful day in Atlanta, my journey took an unexpected turn. A local producer named LeLe crossed my path, sparking a conversation that would alter my trajectory forever. Curious about my background in dance, she introduced me to the world of burlesque, urging me to delve into its rich history. Intrigued, I immersed myself in research, attending classes, studying videos, and absorbing every detail about this captivating art form.

Encouraged by LeLe, I mustered the courage to audition for her show. To my delight, she welcomed me in her show, and I made my debut on stage, igniting a fire within me. The audience’s enthusiastic response fueled my determination to pursue burlesque wholeheartedly.

Armed with passion and dedication, I embarked on a journey of self-discovery, honing my craft through self-study and online courses. With each performance, I grew more confident, captivating audiences with my sultry routines and theatrical flair.

As word of my talent spread, opportunities began to unfold beyond Atlanta’s borders. I found myself traveling across cities and states, sharing my artistry on stages far and wide. From competing in burlesque competitions to attending burlesque festivals, my journey as a showgirl took flight.

With each twirl of the feather boa and shimmy of the hips, I embraced the transformative power of burlesque, celebrating sensuality, empowerment, and self-expression. And as I reflect on my whirlwind journey, I’m grateful for the serendipitous encounter that led me to discover the true magic of burlesque.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall, and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Exploring the burlesque world has been an eye-opening journey. I discovered a space where many individuals are using this art form as a powerful means of healing from past traumas, which is truly inspiring! However, as someone who embraces positivity and radiates love, immersing myself in an atmosphere where residual trauma and drama often prevail proved to be emotionally draining.

At times, it felt like I was absorbing the negative energy around me, which took a toll on my own well-being. However, as my career evolved, I learned the importance of setting boundaries and prioritizing self-care. I realized that while burlesque provided a platform for personal expression, I needed to protect my own energy and focus on refining my craft.

Through perseverance and resilience, I found ways to tune out distractions and stay true to myself. By prioritizing my mental and emotional health, I was able to navigate the challenges of the burlesque community while continuing to grow as an artist. Ultimately, these struggles became opportunities for personal growth and development, shaping me into a stronger performer and individual.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
As the “Tits and Gumbo of Burlesque,” my performances are a flavorful blend of sass, spice, and everything nice. Specializing in cheesecake-style acts, I serve up a mix of vintage glamour and Southern charm that leaves audiences craving more.

What sets me apart is my ability to infuse each performance with a unique blend of my cultural roots, incorporating elements of Louisiana’s rich heritage into every routine. From the sultry sway of jazz to the fiery spirit of Creole culture, my acts are a celebration of all things Southern.

I’m most proud of my ability to connect with audiences on a deeper level, using my performances as a platform to celebrate body positivity, self-love, and empowerment. Through my art, I aim to challenge stereotypes and redefine beauty standards, inspiring others to embrace their true selves unapologetically.

Whether I’m shimmying across the stage or dazzling in sequins and feathers, I strive to create a space where everyone feels welcome and celebrated. As the “Tits and Gumbo of Burlesque,” I’m not just serving up entertainment—I’m serving up a heaping helping of joy, confidence, and a whole lot of flavor.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out.
It’s essential to trust your instincts and discern where you feel most confident and welcomed. Authenticity is paramount in this industry, and genuine connections are invaluable. Be wary of inauthentic energy and environments that may not align with your values or aspirations.

Diversify your learning by engaging with various schools and styles, experimenting with choreography, costumes, and stage personas to discover your unique voice. While seeking feedback from peers and mentors is beneficial, always remain true to yourself and honor your intuition.

Prioritize self-care and seek out a supportive community to navigate the exhilarating yet challenging landscape of burlesque. Reflecting on my own journey, I recognize the importance of acknowledging red flags and embracing authenticity from the outset. Each newcomer possesses a distinct sparkle to share with the world—embrace it fearlessly and let it illuminate your path to success in burlesque.
