Daily Inspiration: Meet Sean Haynes

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sean Haynes.

Hi Sean, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
I was born and raised in New Orleans and moved to ATL after hurricane Katrina. We needed a new beginning. I am an Artist and Art Teacher. We were able to secure jobs farely quickly. At a very early age I knew that I would be an artist. My mom was a creative and she would draw something and tell me to draw it. I would copy it exactly- I was 4. It was then that art would be my passion. As a teen I was always asked to, create images, decorate clothing, and even cut designs in hair. After High School, I attended Southern University at New Orleans, a branch of Southern in Baton Rouge, LA. My instructor had just graduated with an MFA from Yale University. That was a blessing. I was able to learn and grow artistically, meet and interact with great and famous historical African American artists. I eventually earned my B.A. in Art and became an Art Teacher in New Orleans. I’ve been teaching 29 years now. As an artist, it’s always been an amazing journey. Here in Atlanta I’ve been able to connect with the right people. I’ve had to overcome my apprehensions of showing my artwork to the public. My style of work is primarely abstract with the inclusion of shapes and symbolic motifs . It’s very colorful and unique. ¹The work is done in several mediums like wood and paper. I’ve been privileged to participate in numerous art shows, exhibits, auctions, and galleries. I have several artworks that have been acquired through public acquisitions, art collectors, and art lovers. I currently have a Solo show at the Arts Xchange in their Jack Sinclair Gallery ([email protected]). The exhibit is called Journey of the Spirit: The Multi-Dimensional Artistry of Sean Haynes. The opening reception is June 14, 2025. The Artist Talk and show closing is July 19, 2025. I’m living my passion.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
Overcoming fears of others approvals. Art is personal and we all want folks to like what we (artists) create. Another challenge is the selling of the art. Business acumen was not my Forte. I’ve gotten a little better. Also, getting venue’s to show your art. Sometimes you have to be creative and open minded. 1

Thanks – so what else should our readers know about your work and what you’re currently focused on?
My styles are full of color and shape with a third dimension becoming more prevalent. Since 2006, my Urban Spirits series has spun off into multiple media and styles. It has evolved beyond just relief wall sculptures and now includes 3D paper collages (New Roots), relief wooden Wall Flowers, freestanding Spirit Trees and flat wood cutout paintings.

I’m satisfied that people often like the work and seem generally interested. I’m also happy that businesses consider my work.

My work is unique and stands out both figuratively and literally. I make 2D and sculptures. I basically invent everything I make art.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts, blogs or other resources you think our readers should check out?
I love art calalogues from prominent collections, museums, and high profile art exhibits. I follow local artists and artists I respect through social media, but I’m not great at it. I guess I’m getting better.
