Semaj currently serves as Executive Assistant to the President of Morris Brown College.
Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
The obstacles faced had very much to do with the color of my skin and my gender. Being born a black male in Los Angeles was not easy for multiple reasons. I’ve had to learn to watch over my shoulder for law-enforcement. In addition gangs and other forces have the real mini dreams in the big city of Los Angeles, California. In addition, we teach our counterparts and youth that intelligence is a weakness. We have to change the narrative on how we see those who are able to seek knowledge and obtain it without ridicule or lack of support.
Living in a city like Atlanta is very adventagious. I have learned to navigate efficiently, you have to be aligned with individuals who are already connected. This is definitely a who you know city. Unfortunately, I have experienced cliques here. I am eagerly trying to find mentorship to continue my professional development. Unfortunately, it has been difficult.
Alright, so let’s switch gears a bit and talk business. What should we know about your work?
I believe what sets me apart from others is recognizing my human nature. Excepting responsibility and accountability for my own actions. I have garnered a new ability to love beyond faults and being a warrior understanding in that everything is going on is not always going to proceed as planned, we must learn adaptive behaviors.
What are your plans for the future?
Currently, my time and attention has been devoted to Morris Brown College. “The Hard Reset” has began and we are in the midst of making history. We are collaborating with constituance to increase enrollment at the college. In addition, we are boots on the ground creating a nurturing educational environment to prepare our students of today to become leaders of tomorrow.
