Exploring Life & Business with Carmen King of Black Light Candle

Today we’d like to introduce you to Carmen King.

Hi Carmen, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Black Light Candles launched July 2020. Like a lot of people, I was taught to work a 9-5, retire at 65 and then travel.

When the pandemic happened that was my wake-up call. I realized I was taught to live life backwards. Why do I have to work a 9-5 all my life? Why can I only travel when my PTO was approved or after 65? When do I gain control over my life & finances?

At that moment, I decided to become a serial entrepreneur. I decided to step out on faith and overcome every odd that was against me.

Making candles was a hobby that I turned into a business. I invested time, energy & the funds of my 9-5 into myself and business. Today I am a full time business owner, mentor & wholesale vendor to other candle makers.

Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
This has not been a smooth journey. I still cry sometimes out of frustration lol. But that’s okay. We are not supposed to know what we are doing right away. Leaving my secure job to invest myself fully into my business was one of the hardest decisions. Being a business owner means you have to be the good & bad guy. You have to make tough decisions and you only have 30 secs to make them sometimes.

It’s not about how many failures you have. It’s about how many times you get up.

Great, so let’s talk business. Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Black Light Candles, a Black Women Owned Business. We use 100% Soy Wax from pure soybeans. All candles are hand-poured in small batches.

Our candles provided affordable luxury to everyone. All candles are wooden wick. I offer over 40+ scents in candles, wax melts & room sprays,

We also offer wholesale for other candle makers.

How do you think about luck?
I say it’s good luck but my husband says it’s hard work paying off. I was able to make $1,000 in my first month of business. I have now scaled beyond this.

Prior to becoming a business owner, I have worked in call centers, credit departments, supervisor roles & insurance. This experience has taught me so many valuable lessons that I am able to implement into my business.
