Exploring Life & Business with Hannah Elizabeth of Sweet Designs By Hannah

Today we’d like to introduce you to Hannah Elizabeth.

Hi Hannah, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m a passionate baker and confectionery artist. My love for bakeries stemmed from my dad who always took me to bakeries for coffee and sweet treats as a child every chance we got. Also from my grandmother who would host Sunday dinners, it was my duty to pick a dessert and help bake. Once I reached ten, I was baking in the kitchen by myself. I remember my senior year of high school we had to do a life project and create a business, product and commercial. I was born to stand out so I create a cupcake and called it the “retro yumyum”. It was a multi-colored cake with cotton candy buttercream. It was such a hit. I received an A+ on my project and lots of requests from classmates on their birthday to make them again! My baking journey started out as a hobby. After high school, I thought I was going to join the airforce. I decided I was going to give myself a year between graduating and joining the military. In that year God showed me he had other plans for me. I applied for my first job with no particular area of interest. They offered me the dessert section and I was so excited. After working there for years I wanted to learn more and do more in the industry. I then got into donuts, pastries, bread and barista. Which I love and did for years but still craved to learn more and do more in the baking industry. Prior to 2016, I would make cakes for family and a few friends on their birthdays and holidays. 2016 I decided I was going to teach myself how to cake decorate and create gourmet cupcake flavors. That’s when I started doing online bake sales on my days off of work. I wanted to get more serious so I applied at a bakery that won on cake wars. I got the job!

After a short month, I was offered the position to be a cake designer. I knew they had high expectations and I was so nervous to accept the position. I knew I wanted it bad and I did everything in my power to become a great cake decorator. I did thousands of cakes and a variety of treats there. I got to fulfill my dream of creating state-of-the-art wedding cakes. I was working my dream job. But the ultimate goal from the beginning was to manifest my own bakery that I mentioned in my high-school life project. My partner and I started our family and set bigger goals for ourselves. I became a Stay at home mom to focus on raising our family. That’s when I created my own cottage bakery. It was my true passion and I just wanted to bake. My friends supported me and I grew my clientele. My family then decided to move to Atlanta. I was excited and nervous to say the least. I didn’t know anyone or anything about Atlanta. I came here willing to meet all new clients and learn what type of baked goods and flavors that would catch my communities interests. My goal was to come with an open mind and give it my all to build my brand. I learned what Facebook groups I could promote my business in. Networked and really put myself out there. I didn’t come here to be comfortable! It was a slow start, but I stayed consistently and built trust in my community.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It has not been a smooth road! But that’s the beauty of building a brand. Every bump in the road teaches you something. I had to learn from trial and error what was working for my business. I had to learn to have patience when things weren’t going as planned or expected. It took me 3 years to create my own recipe book for everything I make to be perfected. I wanted everything to come out right the first time. Baking is science, you need just enough of this and that or the finished product isn’t perfect. I couldn’t find any recipes online that I loved. So I studied what each ingredient’s role was in a recipe and created my own recipes. My biggest challenge was moving to a new state and starting all over. That’s when I realized it’s mind over matter. If I gave it my all I would get what I wanted out of my business. It was challenging to not be so hard on myself when I thought I was giving my business my everything but wasn’t getting noticed or thinking I didn’t have enough support. That’s when I had to find new ways, create new products, do things a little different than what I was used to.
