Exploring Life & Business with Sydney Jordan

Today we’d like to introduce you to Sydney Jordan.

Hi Sydney, we’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I am originally an Arkansas native from Little Rock to be specific. I joined the U.S. Navy at the age of 17 in 2012 and left for training shortly after. Fast-forward four years later, I find myself as a Paralegal/Notary for the Navy Commander in San Diego. Throughout my Paralegal and Notary training, I became increasingly interested in Wills and Living Trusts especially after my grandfather passed away in 2016. There was a lot of bickering and disagreements about his estate because he did not have a Living Trust. This is when I started to educate myself about Living Trusts. Once I was comfortable enough to explain them, I started to educate my family and friends about Living Trusts and their benefits. The most beneficial feature of this document is the fact that property can be transferred to the heirs immediately, and the family can avoid the probate process entirely. The probate process is basically when the court system/judge is given the authority/power to control the deceased’s assets. I wanted to educate my peers and give the power back to the deceased’s loved ones. I knew that retaining assets within the family was important and inevitable for generating generational wealth. Soon after, I began offering “Living Trusts” as a service after I successfully put my father’s home into one. I found that most attorney offices charge thousands of dollars to generate a Living Trust, but I wanted to make my service affordable to everyone by charging a few hundred.

In 2017, I created “Sydney’s Signings, LLC”, which was based in San Diego, CA, this business started as a simple Mobile Notary Business but expanded with my thirst for knowledge and empowering my peers. I added “Loan Signing Agent” to my list of services in 2017 and began helping borrowers close on their real estate transactions throughout San Diego County. Along the way, I met amazing people, made many mistakes, and learned the do’s and don’ts. In 2020, I was honorably discharged from the Navy and moved in with my father in Los Angeles, CA in efforts to save money to purchase a home. This was very challenging for me, as I had been “on my own” since I was 17 years old. If you’ve ever lived with a parent as an adult, you will understand. Lol

Luckily, I was able to save over $40,000 in nine months because of discipline and sacrifice and had it set in my heart to move out of California to Georgia, where I currently reside. After many unfavorable home inspections, Seller’s cold feet, and incompetent Real Estate Agents, my partner and I, finally settled and found a home in Atlanta, GA. We drove 36 hours, over a period of four days with two kids and an energetic puppy in the backseat in December 2020. When we finally made it safely to GA, we were utterly relieved. After one week, I submitted a GA Notary Public Application and received my Notary Commission shortly after. I am now apart of the Georgia Notary Network (GaNN), which is a new community and space for Georgia notaries to attack precise matters that are unique to our line of work. We are also a community of individuals who connect, share data, resources and refer clients. My slogan is, “A Veteran owned business, ready to serve you” – This is true. After being thanked for my service for eight years, I can now serve my community which my knowledge and skill sets. Doing the work I do is truly an honor.

We all face challenges, but looking back would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
Not at all. During this process, I’ve lost thousands of dollars on earnest money deposits, home inspections, appraisal fees, and other miscellaneous fees I’m sure I can’t think of. I had planned on purchasing a home prior to COVID, so that situation had pushed my timelines back a few months. While I was living with my father, we had constant disagreements. To add, I was also homeschooling my 6 and 3-year-old, a full-time college student, and managing my business. Juggling those three important responsibilities did not come easy.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
Sydney’s Signings, LLC is a Paralegal and Notary service business that serves Atlanta and neighboring sub-cities. I am a credentialed GA Paralegal with five years of experience and specialize in Civil Law processes, statutes, and forms. As a freelance Paralegal, I help my clients with Legal Document Preparation and Notary services. When they are in a legal situation sometimes, it can be daunting, especially the paperwork required. I take the stress away from my clients and do this part for them. They tell me whatever situation they are in, whether that be a separation, divorce, power of attorney, establishing paternity, or child support declaration and I provide the documents they need to fill out and walk them through the process. My clients are empowered because they understand they don’t’ necessarily need to hire a lawyer to navigate these documents, only a little guidance and that is exactly what I’m here for. I’m known for providing and drafting affordable Living Trusts and Legal Document Preparation services to my community and educating them throughout the whole process. Many notaries do not provide these services, but my legal background affords me the opportunity to use those same skills to help my community. I want the readers to know that I offer Paralegal and Notary services in the Atlanta area and would love to assist them and their community with their legal needs. If I can not help, I will steer them in the right direction and show them where and how they can get help.

In terms of your work and the industry, what are some of the changes you are expecting to see over the next five to ten years?
There has been a strong shift to “RON” or Remote Online Notarizations due to COVID. RON is the use of audio/visual technology to complete a notarial act when the principal is not in the same physical location as the notary public. Currently, GA has allowed RON, but the Notary has to be under direct supervision of a GA Attorney. Also, due to the high transaction fees of RON, many GA Notaries would be in the red and unable to make a living doing RON.
