Hidden Gems: Meet Peter Alexander of Hybrid Spine and Sport

Today we’d like to introduce you to Peter Alexander.

Hi Peter, so excited to have you with us today. What can you tell us about your story?
I train and work at an MMA gym in Atlanta. While training, it’s common to see injuries occur. When I was coming up, I would typically just deal with the injuries until a chiropractor and now friend of mine, Jason Pease. He helped me a lot through the years keeping me doing what I loved to do. I was also taking classes at Georgia State University and studying exercise science while working in the gym.

When I was thinking about what I wanted to do after graduation, it didn’t make sense to continue bartending and teaching a couple of classes a week. I remember thinking “well. I could be a chiropractor”. I loved how they only needed their hands and a table to make a huge difference in people’s lives. Plus, the skill of what they did interested me immensely. This is because I was already so obsessed with human movement. Before starting chiropractic school, I worked for a little at a physical therapy clinic and I would study various treatment methods outside of school as well. This helped me a ton when I was in school to become a leader in my class.

Through chiropractic school, I learned the phrase “chiropractors eat their young” meaning there was a stigma in the profession that new graduates get taken advantage of by older docs. Well, I knew I had more to offer than getting taken advantage of. So when I had roughly a year or so left in school, I started to develop Hybrid Spine and Sport. I wanted this to be a place where patient care came first, and if I were to hire any doctors down the road, they would be happy working. Over the following year, I worked to design a logo, build a website, and begin marketing myself as someone who is there for their patient’s benefit.

I was initially planning to rent a room in a gym but realized after covid restrictions that being tied to another business might not be the best in the long run. Don’t get me wrong. I love the gym I work for and will continue to support it, but I needed something I could grow myself and put my own stamp on. That’s when I found my location in Roswell near Canton Street.

Right now, I’m focusing on doing what’s right for the patient. I use a variety of soft tissue techniques, rehab exercises, and chiropractic adjustments. With the combination of the best physical therapy and chiropractic techniques, I can help get patients better, faster. It also helps that the majority of the people I treat now are martial artists. This helps because I’ve trained a ton of various martial arts for over a decade and am very familiar with the needs of each one. Plus, I’ve already had the majority of the injuries that patients walk in with. This helps give me a unique advantage to helping others get back to what they love to do.

Alright, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It’s definitely not been smooth. If it was easy to open a business then everyone would do it. I like the grind. I’ve always prided myself in my work ethic so getting in and figuring it out is something I enjoy doing.

Some of the struggles have definitely been learning how to build a website and proper SEO. If you would have asked me what SEO is a year ago, I would have probably thought an airport somewhere. One of the major struggles have been the days where you don’t see any patients and start to wonder if it’s something you’ve done wrong. It can be tough but if a patient isn’t coming in I just have to remind myself that they aren’t coming in because they’re doing better, which is what it’s all about.

As you know, we’re big fans of Hybrid Spine and Sport. For our readers who might not be as familiar what can you tell them about the brand?
We are a chiropractic practice that specializes in the best of rehab and chiropractic techniques combined. Most appointments are 30 minute sessions where a patient is with the chiropractor for the entire time. This allows us to use various techniques like soft tissue mobilization, similar to massage type techniques. These can be great for releasing muscles and helping increase range of motion. We also use rehab exercises. This is where we stand out because although we’re chiropractors, not everyone needs to be adjusted (pause for dramatic gasp). Some patients are too mobile and need rehab exercises to stabilize their body and get stronger. That being said we also use chiropractic adjustments to help mobilize joints that aren’t moving properly. The combination of these techniques can help us tackle musculoskeletal complaints efficiently. Most chiropractic offices either just use adjustments, and most physical therapy clinics use muscle work techniques. By combining the best of these principles, we can bring the best care for the patient to be efficient.

Are there any important lessons you’ve learned that you can share with us?
Measure your success in multiple ways than just one. Everyone thinks success and sees dollars. Well, there’s a lot more to life than money. Yes, you’ve got to have it to live, but helping people get out of pain and changing their ability to do what they do is just another way to look at your success.
