Today we’d like to introduce you to Emily Martinez.
Thanks for sharing your story with us Emily. So, let’s start at the beginning and we can move on from there.
Most dreams start with a passion and a vision. In my case, it was an opportunity that presented itself and thankfully, fell onto my lap. It all started with a question, “Are you a stylist?”. Not knowing what to say since I had never been asked this, yet even thought of, became an awkward pause. But, in that small moment of silence, I knew something began to stir inside of me that initiated my dream.
I started expressing my creativity through fashion following High School and it became an outlet for me to escape my current wardrobe with vintage pieces. From then on, I became fully confident in my style/clothing which was something I struggled with growing up. This became my mantra.
Styling all started with one person believing in me and deciding to take me on a music video project here in Atlanta for artists under Reach Records. We had one day to prepare and it was go time. From that project alone and support, work started coming in before I was even ready. I knew this had become more than a side hustle but a deep desire to take this seriously. Being able to consult artists and brands that trust my input is so rewarding. I am so grateful that I get to do what I love and grow a bigger passion towards what I do.
Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
Still working a 9-5 and going towards my dream is certainly not easy but NOT impossible! I encourage everyone who has a goal to never let fear and time be your enemy. Work with what you have, strive for greater, be around those that support you and make it happen. Be persistent and network everywhere you can. You’ll never know who you could meet and would want to work with you!
Please tell us about Styled By Em.
I’m a freelance fashion stylist. I have worked with many artists under Reach Records and RMG. I have also worked with brands, fashion editorials and merchandise for major conferences. I currently work in marketing and e-commerce for a small business as my day job. I also own my business that is solely vintage clothing with my best friend. I love being able to go after different endeavors that make me happy! What sets me apart is being able to know that I don’t want to settle for my “plan b” and strive towards my passions with no fear, as hard as that can be sometimes. It will be so peaceful to look back 20 years from now knowing I went towards my goals with nothing holding me back!
There’s a wealth of academic research that suggests that a lack of mentors and networking opportunities for women has materially affected the number of women in leadership roles. Smart organizations and industry leaders are working to change this, but in the meantime, do you have any advice for finding a mentor and building a network?
I have many mentors surrounding me. I think it’s so important to have more than one who are excelling in areas of life that you want to work on. Being inspired by what they do even if it’s not in my field has helped my career so much! Constantly surround yourself with people who make an impact on you once you leave the conversation and who push you to be a better you.
Networking is so vital if you’re a freelancer in any field! Thankfully, I have an amazing group of people that have made that easy for me. If you don’t have that, don’t worry! I know for me networking can happen anywhere at any time so always know that you will have opportunities wherever you go. Bring a friend with you to social events where you know you’ll meet important connections, to help you feel more comfortable! Introduce yourself and always be ready to exchange contact info.
What has helped me is showcasing my projects on my Instagram page and letting the work speak for itself. I’ve noticed people will approach you more often through social media if you use it as your portfolio! Keep your email in your bio and keep it simple!
