Life and Work with Mika Simpson

Today we’d like to introduce you to Mika Simpson.

Mika, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I would say I started to figure out the kind of woman I wanted to become when I came to Atlanta. I moved here in 2014 to attend Clark Atlanta University, where I eventually received my Bachelor’s degree. Walking around campus, I would be so inspired by almost every student I came in contact with. Everyone had a story, a dream, or something that made them unique. Although I chose Business Marketing as my major, I was unsure of exactly what I wanted to do with it. So, like most college students, I found myself going to class, studying, and taking the test without even having an end goal for it all.

As I started networking with the women at CAU, I noticed that I was always getting questions and compliments about my strip lashes. Makeup was always a love of mine, but lashes were my LIFE. I loved picking out the perfect pair, and I knew which lashes went best with different looks. There was a beauty supply store close to Clark’s dorm rooms and I would walk there to buy strip lashes. They had so many different choices and they were organized by numbers. I remember there was a time when other girls in my dorm would call or knock on my door to ask me which number lashes they should get for their next event. Or which number I was wearing that day. Eventually, I started to think, “I’m getting the beauty supply all this money, I might as well start my own lash brand!” Within the next year, I had done all my research, got a friend to make my logo, and that’s exactly what I did!

Millionaire Minks became popular all around campus and eventually I was known as, “The Lash Girl.” Originally, I didn’t think of this new business of mine as a career, but I was so excited that I just kept going with it. There was a new high I got with each sale I made and eventually this was the only thing could see myself doing.

In 2017, I took a class with a very popular lash artist here in Atlanta for lash extensions, and the rest is history. I fell in love with the service of lashing and I found my passion. Millionaire Minks is continuing to expand in products, better quality lashes, and the overall customer experience. I’m more than optimistic about the rest of 2019, I have so much in store for my supporters.

Great, so let’s dig a little deeper into the story – has it been an easy path overall and if not, what were the challenges you’ve had to overcome?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. With every new business comes doubts, and that’s where your faith begins to test you. Before I made Millionaire Minks my full-time career, I was working at a sport’s bar in downtown Atlanta. I remember the morning I decided to quit like it was yesterday. For some reason, I just woke up and said, “I’m over this.” I sat there for a while questioning myself, but eventually, I called in and told the manager, “I’m not coming in anymore.” I said it just like that. Within minutes she had almost the entire staff (most of them were friends) on the phone trying to convince me that what I was saying was crazy. With every voice, I heard there was a, “What if…” or “But you can do both.” I knew that every concern they were expressing was coming from a good place. They were only looking out for me, but at the end of the day, I had faith in myself as well as my business. I had made up my mind because I already knew what I was capable of. That was the last job I ever worked.

With that being said, my advice for any young woman starting a new journey would be to believe in yourself. As cliche as it may sound, it’s so true! You have to. Even if nobody else does. You have to go for whatever it is you want in life with no regrets. Now that doesn’t mean go out and quit your perfectly good job. That was just my story. Everyone has their own story, and every chapter is different.

Millionaire Minks started with mink strips, which is the fastest and least expensive option. You can order our mink strips online, and they are also available for pick up. However, lash extension, which is our newest service, require a booked appointment through our website. They typically last for about two to three weeks. I’m most proud of the customer service I provide with Millionaire Minks. I take pride in my business and want nothing but the best quality for my customers/clients.

Are there any apps, books, podcasts or other resources that you’ve benefited from using?
Social media is a HUGE part of my everyday life. There are so many inspirational women on Instagram, I don’t see how every woman watching isn’t ready to take over the world! From fashion to hair, to business, you can find anything you’re looking for on these apps. Even though I see all of these posts to be motivational now, I had to learn not to compare myself to what I saw on social media. It’s very easy to get caught up in the hype of it all and feel like you’re not doing enough. Like I said before, everyone’s story is different. Don’t go comparing your chapter 1 to someone else’s chapter 15. Not only that, but everything isn’t a competition! We have to learn as women to lift each other up. We are stronger together than we are apart.
