Life & Work with Shermaine Perry-Knights

Today we’d like to introduce you to Shermaine Perry-Knights.

Hi Shermaine, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I’m an award-winning facilitator, project manager, and author. I facilitate executive coaching, team-building sessions, and career readiness workshops. As a Certified Professional in Talent Development, I am passionate about helping others develop emotional intelligence and leadership skills. I am a proud military brat and a life-long learner. My journey started in San Diego and we shipped out with the military a few weeks later. I was born into a bi-cultural military family and have enjoyed every twist and turn of this journey. I’ve moved more times than I can count and have had the unique opportunity to grow up across the world.

I’ve spent most of my childhood outside of the U.S. and gained an appreciation for new experiences, diversity, equity, and inclusion. I graduated high school in Germany and returned to the U.S. to earn a bachelor’s of arts in political science from Spelman College and a master’s in public administration from Strayer University. I’ve traveled throughout Asia and the West Indies, and I lived and studied in Europe and the Middle East. As a master instructional designer, I am knowledgeable about learning development and facilitation of outcome-based learning programs. Earlier this year, I was recognized by the Association for Talent Development as the 2020 One To Watch. Each of my published books supports self-care, growth, resilience, and career readiness. Would you say it’s been a smooth road, and if not what are some of the biggest challenges you’ve faced along the way?
In theory, the road was smooth; however, there are always bumps along the way. Moving so much took an emotional toll and taught me resilience at the same time. I have great relationships with friends across the world… and those friends quickly became family. I’ve learned to make the best out of every situation and location.

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
I am on a mission to promote the growth mindset. As an author and learning development professional, I create digestible learning experiences for managers and executives. Simply put, I help people build confidence and skill in their careers. This can be conflict resolution skills, emotional intelligence, and project management, just to name a few. I am most proud of my children’s book ‘I Move A Lot and That’s Okay’. It captures the heart of who I am… a resilient person who adapts quickly to change. I am proud to create adult and youth coloring books for stress management and this children’s book. I have a thirst for knowledge, new experiences, and uncharted paths, and that sets me apart from others.

Have you learned any interesting or important lessons due to the Covid-19 Crisis?
Absolutely! Covid-19 has taught me that flexibility, confidence to embrace change, and a growth mindset are key to pivoting in this environment. Those who invested in themselves during the Covid-19 crisis are seeing great rewards. I am proud to say that I’ve published several guided journals, a couples activity book, adult coloring books, and a children’s book on resiliency during the crisis.
