Life & Work with Alberto Garcia-Uria of National

Today we’d like to introduce you to Alberto Garcia-Uria.

Hi Alberto, thanks for joining us today. We’d love for you to start by introducing yourself.
I have began my artistic journey in San Francisco, taking an abstract class from Leigh Hyams at UC Berkeley. I continued my education at the Florence Classical Arts Academy in Florence Italy. I continue to take workshops in Florence and residencies in Mexico.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
My biggest struggle has been making a living while finding time to pursue my need to create. Now that I am retired, I am finally able to dedicate full time to creating. Another challenge for me as an artist is finding my voice…. Am I a figurative artist, or a representational artist or an abstract artist? And why must I make a choice?

Can you tell our readers more about what you do and what you think sets you apart from others?
Because of my training at the Academy in Florence, I tend to lean towards figurative. My love of abstract combined with my skills as a figurative artist are often combined in my work. Most people see me as a figurative artist. and I am proud of the progress I have made in creating works that are both figurative and abstract.

Can you tell us more about what you were like growing up?
All I did was draw. I always carried paper and pencil wherever I went and drew everything. I tended to always beat to a different drum then most others and as result was bullied. I was mostly interested in art… and cars
