Life & Work with Cameron Cullers

Today we’d like to introduce you to Cameron Cullers.

Hi Cameron, please kick things off for us with an introduction to yourself and your story.
Yes, I started martial arts when I was five years old. My father was my very first instructor. He taught me and my siblings Tang Soo Do. We used to train every Saturday morning at his school, and I thought it was pretty cool. It was supposed to be a martial arts class, but my five-year-old mind always saw it as me getting ready and prepared to enter a Mortal Kombat tournament where I would get to fight a Scorpion or Subzero. My mom would come train sometimes as well and make it a lighter session with her comedic relief.

My dad trained us hard, and I’m grateful for it because it instilled the resilience that I have and have kept with me to this day. My mother, though not a martial artist would always stress the importance of the discipline, respect, and power we would gain from our father’s classes. As I got older, I studied under other instructors and achieved other black belts in various other styles, Taekwondo, Karate, Hapkido, Krav Maga, to name a few. Some of my other teachers were Grand Master Larry Green and Grand Master Soon Ho Lee.

I have six black belts. I have two locations for the Mentorship program one is FitSquad studios 1240 Metropolitan Pkwy NE Atlanta GA 30310 the other location is Total Fitness Reveloution Studios 1303 Veterans Memorial Hwy SE Mableton GA 30126. Our school is to mentor and develop young men into substantial and contributing pioneers of society.

We all face challenges, but looking back, would you describe it as a relatively smooth road?
No, it never is. I started my school in 2018 after watching students not receive training that was encouraging their mental, emotional and physical growth. Through this process, it has been many ups and downs. The hardest thing is being passionate about this mission and be on the giving end and not being sure if the people on the receiving end are as appreciative as you feel they should be. The funny thing is, the purpose of a gift is to be given away despite how it’s received. So sometimes we (I), despite how I’m feeling, have to step out of myself and remind myself that this journey I am on is not for me but for others that need it. Some people come on our journey with us for a reason, a season or a lifetime. My mother taught me that.

Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I am the professor of boxing and Martial arts/ Self Defense at Spelman College. I am a martial artist, healer, mentor, coach, protector, guardian. I specialize in teaching people how to protect themselves, their minds, body and spirit. I teach from experience, and that’s how I relate to my students. I’ve been on the tournament scene, where I have accomplished state titles 3x in Taekwondo and World championship in Karate. I’ve worked armed security for the private sectors. Being able to connect with my community has been the greatest opportunity of all.

Before we let you go, we’ve got to ask if you have any advice for those who are just starting out?
Have a plan. Write down your ideas. Design and redesign your strategy and go for it! Only you can make your dreams come true. Why spend your entire life living to fulfill someone else’s dream? Fulfill yours because you never know how much time you will have to do it. Also, I love to live and live with no regrets.
