Today we’d like to introduce you to Jay Terrell.
Hi Jay, we’re thrilled to have a chance to learn your story today. So, before we get into specifics, maybe you can briefly walk us through how you got to where you are today?
I’m Jay Terrell, a creative from Atlanta who always had a thing for storytelling and making something outta nothing. I started with just a camera, some ideas, and a crew of folks who believed in the vision. No big money, just passion, faith, and a whole lot of grind.
At first I was just filming stuff that felt real to me. Then I realized there’s a whole generation of young Black creatives like me who weren’t being seen the way they should. That’s when I started building the Generation Z Network, a space for us to create, shine, and be loud with it.
It’s been a journey full of ups, downs, learning curves, and major wins. I’ve produced shows, thrown events, and created a platform that’s now bigger than me. It’s for the culture. For the ones who don’t always get the spotlight but got something to say.
I’m still in it. Still learning. Still growing. But everything I do is about making space for us, our stories, our voices, our truth.
Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Definitely not a smooth road. It’s been a lot of trial and error, learning as I go, and figuring things out with little to no blueprint. Coming up as a young Black creative in this industry, you’re constantly having to prove yourself, especially when you don’t have big names or big budgets backing you.
There were times when I doubted myself, times I didn’t have the right resources, or had to pull full productions together with nothing but favors, faith, and hustle. I’ve lost sleep, money, and even people I thought would ride for the long haul. But all of that shaped me. Every setback taught me something and pushed me to go harder.
If it wasn’t for my mentor Kiki Ely, I honestly don’t know where I’d be. She believed in me early, gave me real guidance, and reminded me to trust my gift even when things felt heavy. Having someone like that in your corner makes a huge difference.
Appreciate you sharing that. What else should we know about what you do?
I’m a creative director, producer, and the founder of the Generation Z Network, a platform built to spotlight raw, real, and rising Black talent through original shows, events, and storytelling. I specialize in developing content that reflects our culture, from reality TV to scripted series, live experiences, and festival activations. Everything I do is rooted in authenticity and giving space to voices that usually get overlooked.
I’m probably most known for building things from the ground up. I take pride in turning ideas into full productions with limited resources but maximum impact. Shows like Generation Z: (Atlanta, Los Angeles, Coast to Coast,Ultimate Vacation), Playground Legends,The Link Up, Verified Drip and Road 2 Nationals are just a few examples of projects that started with a vision and now have real momentum behind them.
What I’m most proud of is creating something that feels bigger than me is a network that gives young creatives like myself a space to shine, grow, and be seen. I’m not waiting on Hollywood to hand me a seat at the table. I built my own.
What sets me apart is that I’m really tapped in with my generation, especially the creatives and dreamers coming up in the South. I know the stories we want to tell, the way we want to be seen, and the quality we expect. I’m not afraid to take risks, keep it real, and push boundaries, all while staying rooted in community and culture.
What matters most to you?
What matters most to me is impact. I care about creating things that mean something, that move people, that shift the culture in a real way. I’m not in this just for clout or numbers. I want to build platforms that open doors for others, especially young Black creatives who don’t always see themselves represented the right way.
Legacy matters too. I want the work I do to outlive me. I want people to look back and say, “He really built something for us.” That’s why I go so hard. Not just to make noise, but to make a difference.
And above all, staying true to myself and my community will always be at the center of everything. That’s my why.
