Life & Work with Pretty Kris of Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Pretty Kris.

Hi Pretty, can you start by introducing yourself? We’d love to learn more about how you got to where you are today?
I was born in Alabama and found my voice while singing in talent shows, school theater performances, and the church choir. As a teenager I moved to Chicago to pursue the arts and develop my passion for music, writing and melodic storytelling. I moved to Atlanta, to explore the music world, make prominent connections and involve myself in representing the culture through writing and performing music. As an artist, I am always working to grow and evolve, and I want my music to feel magnetic, familiar and cinematic.

Can you talk to us a bit about the challenges and lessons you’ve learned along the way. Looking back would you say it’s been easy or smooth in retrospect?
Not at all. As a black woman in today’s society I am apart of the balancing act. Before an artist, I’m a daughter, a sister, an aunt, and now a mother of a one year old son. There are significant aspects in each of the roles we play that are meant to deter us off of our paths. However, we make a solid decision to get up and hit the trail running for what we love and believe in. I’ve been knocked down many times, but my power is in my choice to not stay on the ground for too long. I’m forever grateful for everyone that has helped me in every aspect over the years because I wouldn’t be creating today if it wasn’t for the angels in my villages.

Thanks for sharing that. So, maybe next you can tell us a bit more about your work?
I am still perfecting my craft but I love to write, rhyme and sing. I spent a lot of time in Chicago doing spoken word and singing original songs with a live band. Right now I’m having fun exploring samples and creating my own spin to the original song. I recently created a Youtube visualizer for a song I wrote based off a classic 05 love song by Jamie Foxx & Twista. I’m proud that I’m still chasing dreams after multiple setbacks. I’m most proud of my son Truth, because he is my small but mighty motivator.

Where do you see things going in the next 5-10 years?
The music industry is always evolving quickly. I imagine myself growing more and evolving along with it. I hope to build a supportive team soon to help me develop artistically. There are many artificial intelligence notions of music out there that sounds good but takes the real feeling out of true making music. I hope to create a fun, yet timeless and notable feeling when you hear Pretty on the beat.
