Today we’d like to introduce you to Akil Mccoy.
Akil, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
My Name Is Akil Je’Lani McCoy, I am 26. I am from Tuscaloosa, AL. And now, I’m one of the hottest new rising Makeup Artiste In The Atlanta, Ga Area. My life in makeup started very late, I was about 19 and oddly enough at that time, my life was so new as a young adult in college, I literally thought life could not get hard as long as you worked and stayed focused. Little did I know, a hardship in my life came when I received a large lump sum of money! Now, you’d think why would this be a hardship or a downfall if I had just received this blessing. Well, being young and free, I spread like wildfire, quit my job, dropped out of college, went on trips spending recklessly. I had lost reality. I thought this money I had, I could survive and live off. But I soon life took a turn. I was piss poor late on rent, stopped paying my insurance and had wrecked two cars. I soon found myself homeless by the end of that year in 2012. I moved in with my dad and was looking stupid, even though my dad loved me and did not judge me on what decisions I made. My life changed so much in that year, but overall, I found love in art which I had always loved art but this time, it was presented to me in makeup. The first thing I used to do was brows, then it went to individual lashes, then foundation, eyeshadows, blushes, etc. I was self-taught because I had always drawn and painted on canvas as a young child and loved and knew art. So, it came naturally. Now, of course, it wasn’t the best at that time, but being consistent and ambitious and wanting to work on skill became so necessary in my life because it was a gateway to getting me some money and me not having to work for anybody else. So, I studied and still today is studying the art of glam so I can master it. Because AkilaFace will be one of the greatest to ever do it. Myself personally, I enjoy being a new mold and look for Makeup lovers and hustlers to inspire from and admire. I do this for the people that want freedom in what they love doing.
We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc. – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
The road has definitely not been smooth. Life is understanding, you can’t have too many good days without a couple of bad days. It’s about persevering through your struggles. A few of mines is losing my grandmother at 13 to cancer.
Losing my mother at 16 to cancer.
Losing someone I loved the most.
Failing myself time after time
Losing a sense of reality.
Not believing in my ART.
Not feeling worthy.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the AkilaFace™️story. Tell us more about the business.
Well first it would be a great thing to call AkilaFace a business but honestly, AkilaFace is an entrepreneur a young black man trying to become a millionaire off makeup. But one thing that sets me apart from other makeup artist is that I believe in having a passion for the skill of makeup art. Not just makeup.
Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
Well, luck is kind of like wishing on a star. So, I would say miracles believing in everything I only dreamed about and it comes to pass has been nothing but true miracles. No good or bad luck just miracles.
