Meet Amanda Nicholson of The Prude’s Guide to Intimacy

Today we’d like to introduce you to Amanda Nicholson.

Thanks for sharing your story with us Amanda. So, let’s start at the beginning, and we can move on from there.
In High School, after reading a book about a Black Psychologist who worked with a young lady who was sexually abused as a child I decided that I wanted to be a clinician. As time (and college) progressed I decided that I wanted to be Marriage and Family Therapist that specializes in Sex Therapy.

I decided that I wanted to be a Marriage and Family Therapist while attending Savannah State University after I learned that the divorce rate for the Black community was higher than the marriage rate (not sure if this statistic still applies in 2019). After growing up in a loving two-parent household that modeled what I still believe today are healthy relationship habits, I knew that I had to do something about that in my own way.

So I set out to help Black love flourish! Not soon after I took a Sex Roles and Gender course where I decided that I also wanted to be a Sex Therapist, that was back in 2009, and here I am ten years later making it all happen! After graduating from Savannah State University with a Bachelor of Science in Behavior Analysis and a minor in Africana Studies, I attended Mercer University where I received my Master of Family Therapy degree.

I currently attend Widener University where I have earned a Master of Sex Education with a concentration in Clinical Sex Therapy. At this time I am also working on my Doctorate at Widener University (same major) as well (hoping and praying for a December completion!!).

During my time at Widener, I have honed in on the work that I want to do. Which centers helping women find their inner sexual goddess as well as helping people find a balance between their spiritual and sexual selves. This is how “The Prude’s Guide To Intimacy” was born!

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The road has definitely not been easy so far! I have experienced many obstacles along the way, many of them being Academic. As I have progressed in my graduate programs, I have had to retake comprehensive exams, twice in my MFT program and once in my Ph.D. program, that have made me second guess if I was worthy of being in the fields that I am so passionate about!

I believe those experiences have made me stronger than ever!! They have taught me never to give up even when you don’t believe you can go anymore, you have what you need inside of you already to keep going. These experiences are what keep me going when I’m not getting the engagement that I want on YouTube, Instagram, or Facebook.

Building an audience is tough, as well as trying to constantly stay engaged with them while working both a full time and part time job in addition to writing a dissertation. It’s been a balancing act, but all I can do is keep on pushing forward. Since I have experience with failure and having to try again until it happens, it has taught me the art of patience.

While things may not always work out when you want them to or make as big as an impact as you thought it would when you first start does not mean that you give up. You keep going, failures only make you a stronger person, and they teach you that the world will go on, so you have to get up and keep moving with it!

Please tell us about The Prude’s Guide to Intimacy.
The Prude’s Guide to Intimacy specializes in helping women effectively communicate their sexual needs to their partners. The focus is to help women who grew up in conservative/religious settings or consider themselves prude’s to open up more about their needs and wants not only in their relationships but in their bedrooms as well.

We talk a lot about women taking charge of their sexuality but how do women who didn’t get the sex talk or still shy away from those conversations do that? My hope is to help them have those conversations so that they can be their own version of a sexual goddess!

On my YouTube channel, The Prude’s Guide to Intimacy, I focus on giving short and to the point education and advice. On my channel people will find videos on how cuffing season actually works, sexual anatomy, and so much more!

The Prude’s Guide to Intimacy is different because there is no one out there really focused on teaching sex education skills from this point of view. Many people want to be sex positive and want to learn more, but they may be too uncomfortable/intimidated to go to someone who is more bold in their sexuality and how they teach sex education.

The Prude’s Guide to Intimacy is where they would come first to build their confidence in themselves as sexual beings. My goal is to give them the building blocks and the voice they need so that they can feel more comfortable seeking out a class on something like bondage and telling their partner that they want to do so.

What I am most proud of at this moment is that I am doing it!! The Prude’s Guide Intimacy was just an idea that I had because I am the women I want to help, so I’m just proud that I stepped outside of my own shell to provide this type of education to others.

If you had to go back in time and start over, would you have done anything differently?
If I had to start over what I would have done differently is approaching my launch date. I decided to step away from social media while I was getting my YouTube Channel, logo, and branding done.

During the time, I stepped away I wish that I would have shared more with my followers about what I was doing as I was rebranding during that time, going from a personal platform where I shared advice to a business platform, to build up the hype around what I was doing as well as what was to come.

Also, I would’ve started before last year, but everything has its time! I did not realize how many women needed what I was talking about until I started posting videos on topics that many feel are still taboo. So I wish I would’ve started a YouTube channel and discussing these topics more in-depth before now.
