Today we’d like to introduce you to Amber Lewis.
Amber, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
I used to get in trouble in grade school for being too talkative. Instead of the education system trying to enhance the skill of being social, I would get all A’s with low participation scores. Social N The City is a company that allows me to market who I’ve always been.
A personal lifestyle brand, Social N The City exists to empower people to be their authentic selves in all of the spaces they occupy. I do social media in my 9-5 as the Director of Digital & Social Media for the City of Detroit and I am social through the services provided through Social N The City. Being that I’m versed on the back end (strategy, production, creative direction, copywriting, brand management) and the front end (influencer campaigns, event hosting, dj, modeling, on-camera talent) my business is uniquely positioned in the digital space.
Has it been a smooth road?
A huge struggle that I’ve faced in always being on is not overworking myself and experiencing burnout. I’ve learned that I have to have wellness to fuel my work ethic and that saying no to others is often saying yes to myself.
Being a woman of many wigs means that I do a lot and offer a lot of services and another challenge that I encounter is deciding the right time to do what. So far, I’ve been doing what I enjoy and shelving it when it begins to feel like something on my to do list. I live by the mantra that life is one great big canvas and you should put all the colors on it you can, so I still have some painting to do.
So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Social N The City story. Tell us more about the business.
Social N The City is a lifestyle brand that empowers women to be their authentic selves in all of the spaces they occupy through content, campaigns, and collaboration.
How do you think the industry will change over the next decade?
I see the industry being more women powered and driven. I’ve created a movement called #BWDoSocial to be a collective of Black women who work in the social realm disrupting standards and shifting the pipeline both online and in-person. By investing and supporting the next generation of digital media, we will create more career opportunities for Black women to excel in being trendsetters in the digital space.
