Today we’d like to introduce you to Angel Marie.
Angel, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
As a child, I would watch my mother do everyone’s hair and try to copy her. I would try to relax my own hair, braid my brother and my barbie dolls hair. I never thought doing hair was a career though, so I went to college and study Psychology. Throughout school, college and jobs I would always find myself still doing others hair on the side. So I finally decided in 2015 to go to Aveda Institute and get my cosmetologist license.
It took me working hourly and as a commission stylist to finally take the courage to become responsible for my own success and become my own boss. Trust me, the process was not easy, I had to always give myself self-encouragement talks and remind myself everything would be okay.
Has it been a smooth road?
Nothing worth having doesn’t come easy and that includes success! No, there were trail and errors along the way, trying to find the right environment for myself, learning my own boundaries, dedicating time off and sticking to set work hours. Struggles are apart of the process.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
My business mission is to care for others hair as if it’s my own. Ensuring that the styles I service, the products I use and the technique I use all promote growth. I specialize in healthy hair and I’m known for my protective styles; individual crochet and passion twist. What I am most proud of is my client’s reaction to hair growth, to the response they receive from others and just helping build their overall self-esteem. What sets me apart is simple, I care. I care if something doesn’t look right, I care if their hair is shedding, and I care about what they are using on their hair. Hair is 25% of what I do and 75% of my client’s maintenance so I care to know that they are educated on how to maintain it.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
I do believe Atlanta is a great place to start a business like mine because it’s just a vain city. Beauty plays a huge role in Atlanta scene. For someone just starting out, I think that Atlanta could be an ideal start, they would just need to have a huge personality, capable of networking and the skills behind them to build. Far as what the city could do to help improve is take being licensed to do hair more serious because there are alot of people doing hair without a license or no type of knowledge of hair. Not only would them taking the issue more serious, it’ll also help those with a passion be able to grow their business.
