Meet Arlene James of AliJ Designs

Today we’d like to introduce you to Arlene James.

Hi Arlene, it’s an honor to have you on the platform. Thanks for taking the time to share your story with us – to start maybe you can share some of your backstory with our readers?
For a long time, my focus was on raising my kids and supporting my family. Creativity was always in me I had a sewing machine, and I was sewing since I lived in New York, when I moved to Georgia in 2004 I was sewing for my home making draperies, I had clients and customers but my focus shifted to taking care of my kids and educating myself as I went through a divorce but it wasn’t something I had the time or space to fully lean into. Life was busy. I was working, being a mom, showing up where I was needed, going to school and trying to survive my situation, it was also not an entrepreneurial world as it is currently.

But over the years, that creative pull never left. I’ve always loved fabric the way it feels, the way it drapes, the way it can completely transform a room without saying a word. I would find myself still sewing, still imagining what a space could look like with just the right pillow or pop of texture.

In 2022, I finally gave myself permission to take that creative part of me seriously. That’s when I decided to officially open my business and call it AliJ Designs a name that felt true to me and my vision (my parents always called me Ali growing up and my oldest brother never stoped calling me that and it stuck). I didn’t want to just sell pretty things. I wanted to create pieces that were purposeful, elevated, and made with heart.

AliJ Designs is about comfort, texture, and intention. It’s about making your space feel like it reflects you. Every pillow cover I design is handpicked, handmade, and curated to transform a room into something special. And while it took me some time to fully step into this role, I’m here now doing the work ( and oh my its hard work, but for me if feel right its my soul work), creating with soul, and building something I’m proud of.

I’m sure it wasn’t obstacle-free, but would you say the journey has been fairly smooth so far?
It definitely hasn’t been a smooth road. I think sometimes people see a finished product and don’t realize how much goes on behind the scenes especially when you’re building something from the ground up.

The market can feel really saturated. You’re up against big box brands with the budgets and platforms to dominate every search engine, social feed, and shelf space. They’re mass producing items that don’t always prioritize quality or craftsmanship but they’ve got the visibility and the influence. As a small, independent brand, that can feel discouraging.

Then there’s the financial side. Access to funding is one of the biggest challenges I’ve faced. As a Black owned business, there’s a lot of red tape. Banks want to see big revenue, high credit scores, long histories. But when you’re new, you’re often still proving yourself and self funding everything along the way. You’re trying to grow and survive at the same time. It’s tough.

And it’s not just about the money it’s about opportunity. About being seen. About people giving your work a chance, not just because it’s beautiful, but because it’s rooted in quality and intention.

Still, I show up. I push through. I remind myself that what I’m creating with AliJ Designs isn’t just another product it’s thoughtful, handmade, and soulful. It may take longer, but I know it’s worth it

Appreciate you sharing that. What should we know about AliJ Designs?
AliJ Designs is a home décor brand that specializes in handmade, high-quality pillow covers designed to elevate any space. I focus on curating fabrics that bring together texture, tone, and feeling so that a room doesn’t just look good, but feels intentional, grounded, and alive.

Every piece is thoughtfully made. I don’t mass produce; I handcraft. That’s a huge part of what sets me apart. I work in small batches, paying attention to the story the fabric wants to tell. Whether it’s a bold velvet, a soft neutral, or a textured mud cloth, I choose each material with care and build collections that feel like more than just products they feel like pieces of a home.

In addition to my ready to style collections, I also create custom work for boutique owners, and individual clients. One boutique owner reached out to me personally to create custom mud cloth pieces that aligned with her store’s aesthetic and we’ve since completed two separate orders together. I also had the honor of creating custom pillows for a respected perfumer’s Atlanta headquarters. After he shared a video of the space, I curated the entire selection based on the mood and feel of his interior. He loved the final result and even shared it on his social media which meant so much to me.

These small but significant connections are the kind that keep me grounded and grateful. They remind me that people are paying attention to the heart and intention behind my work.

I’m most proud of how AliJ Designs makes people feel. Customers often tell me that their pillow covers changed the whole mood of their room. That’s powerful. I take pride in knowing my work adds beauty and comfort to someone’s everyday life.

I want readers to know that AliJ Designs is built on purpose. Every stitch matters. Every piece is rooted in a belief that luxury doesn’t have to be loud, but it should always feel like you. Whether you’re decorating a new space, refreshing a room, or simply bringing more peace into your home, my goal is to offer pieces that support that journey with warmth, quality, and intention. All pieces are proudly made in the USA

Is there anything else you’d like to share with our readers?
If there’s one thing I’d like readers to know, it’s this:

AliJ Designs is a small brand with a big heart. We’re not backed by big budgets or powerful connections we’re fueled by passion, purpose, and the belief that thoughtful work still matters. I don’t want the brand to be seen just because of trends, color, or community I want it to be considered because of the quality, the detail, and the care that goes into every single piece.

It’s easy to overlook small brands, especially in a space that’s saturated with mass production and big names. But I truly believe there’s still a place for work that’s slow, soulful, and intentional. I hope people continue to make space for brands like mine and others like it who are showing up every day and building something real.

Thank you for seeing me, and thank you for sharing my story.
