Meet Ashlee Berryman of Bby Longway Lashes in Clarkston

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ashlee Berryman.

Ashlee, let’s start with your story. We’d love to hear how you got started and how the journey has been so far.
I started doing eyelashes just out of curiosity to see where it can go. Both of the jobs I was working closed down around the same time so I wasn’t exactly sure what direction I wanted to take my life in career-wise but I knew I needed to try something different. I’ve always worked a job I never actually liked, or I would feel like my real talents weren’t being used to my benefit. Basically, I needed to find something I could do that would keep my attention, and something I could build on.

One of my good friends happens to stumble across a discounted Eyelash Extension class on Groupon. I was like why not try it out. I had nothing else going on at the moment. Took the class… hated it. I didn’t think I would love what I was doing as much as I do now. I kept practicing anyway despite my feelings because bills were due and I couldn’t just sit around. Shortly after, I started accepting clients. Waking up early, sending out DMs to all the ladies in my friend’s list to let them know I’m an upcoming lash artist and need models. That effort paid off by my 4th month of doing lashes my books were completely filled up consistently. Not to mention, I wasn’t nearly as confident about my work as I am now. I didn’t even like my work lol. But everyone else did. I still have a lot of my girls who was there from the beginning. As of today, I’ve done over 400 women eyelashes. Sticking with something not only teaches you discipline, it opens the door to new opportunities. It’s not only about eyelashes. I uplift people everyday and encourage them to confront their challenges with faith. All adversity builds you into the person you are meant to become. Doing eyelashes has inspired me to go after whatever I desire. I would never have known I could stand on my own 2 feet without working for someone else had I not took the leap of faith. When you’re in a tough spot keep moving. Just don’t give up!

We’re always bombarded by how great it is to pursue your passion, etc – but we’ve spoken with enough people to know that it’s not always easy. Overall, would you say things have been easy for you?
Initially, when you first start anything new, it’s uncomfortable. I had to get used to putting myself out there and trusting the process. I had to learn how to better manage my money. I had to use all the negative emotions and personal things I was going through as fuel to level up. Half the battle is pushing yourself even when you don’t “feel” inspired at that very moment. I was looking for something that could ground me and it came in the form of doing eyelashes. It’s like God made me deal with myself finally. I had always been kind of all over the place or unsure of my purpose. Certain circumstances pushed me to be more independent and confident in my own abilities. That’s why I say it’s bigger then lashes.

So let’s switch gears a bit and go into the Bby Longway Lashes story. Tell us more about the business.
When I started my business it was more hobby-based. However when I started seen the growth in myself and my work, I decided this was something I would take serious and build on. I started off considerably cheap to reel in the ladies and adjusted my price as I grew. I started off doing Classic Sets but my favorite style of lashes to do are Russian Volume and Hybrid Sets. I believe what sets me apart is the way I connect with people. I have great relationships with my clients. We spoil each other. You get what you put out in terms of positivity. Also, I wanted everyday girls like me to be able to wear extensions so I targeted my prices around that idea. Extensions can become an expensive necessity lol.

Has luck played a meaningful role in your life and business?
I don’t really believe in Luck itself. I believe life throws obstacles and opportunities at us to learn and grow from. Whatever is for you, will be for you, and no other human being can do anything to hinder that.
