Meet Ayanna Scroggins

Today we’d like to introduce you to Ayanna Scroggins.

Ayanna, can you briefly walk us through your story – how you started and how you got to where you are today.
I’ve always been in love with music. Always. It was an initial and natural attraction that never went away. I’ve been in every performing arts program you can imagine, along with attending art school and majoring in music/mass comm in college and post grad.

My journey as a recording artist, however, has been one that I’ve been concentrating on for the past 5 years. I was introduced to the music business when I auditioned for a girl group and made the cut, although the group dissolved, the connections I made through that venture didn’t. I started sitting in on recording sessions, songwriting, vocal arranging, producing, etc. I’ve been developing my style and sound as an artist and performer ever since.

Has it been a smooth road?
Do smooth roads even exist? (lol) Seriously though, this journey has definitely been a labor of love. When I started as an artist, I was green, super green. I had no idea what to expect. After the girl group dissolved, I knew a solo career was what I wanted. However, one thing I totally dismissed as an artist was the actual work ethic and business savvy it takes to keep the upward mobility moving, well, upwards.

There were a lot of mental and spiritual obstacles to overcome and lessons to learn, along with the challenges of making the music itself. Great art isn’t some miraculous creation that just happens. It takes collaboration, talent, teamwork, chemistry, and everything else in between. Its been an interesting road accomplishing that balance, but I’m finding it. Slowly, but surely.

We’d love to hear more about your business.
I am a singer, songwriter, recording artist and actress. I’ve been working behind the scenes for the last few years, but now I’m ready to show the world what I’ve been working on and what I have to offer. As an artist, I come from a very formal and classical background, studying music in school pretty much my entire life.

I think that training lends itself to my music in a way that I understand the science of music. I know immediately which notes compliment a composition, how chords work together to incite emotion in the brain, how lyrics bring meaning and substance to a body of work.

When I work in my studio, I feel my way through a session. I allow the classic formula of music making to serve as a guide while giving my feelings in the moment free range to tell my story and write the song itself. My music is honest, always honors my emotions as a creator, and will never fail to make the listener ‘feel’. I love what I do, and you’ll notice that as soon as you ‘press play.’

Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Atlanta is the mecca for young creators like myself. The ever-growing music and film scene serves as the perfect soil to root yourself in something real, but then again, being a native Atlantan, I might be biased. 😉

Just like any place, you might have to dig a little before you find your footing, but in a city like Atlanta, the potential is limitless. The main factor is YOU. What are you willing to do to get what you want out of this venture? This city? This life? I’m a firm believer that anything is possible if you want it to be.

A good attitude and actual talent are nice, but a strong work ethic and discipline is absolutely mandatory.
