Meet Brittney of BeBeat Cosmetics in Metro Atlanta

Today we’d like to introduce you to Brittney M. Waters.

So, before we jump into specific questions about the business, why don’t you give us some details about you and your story.
I have been employed and underemployed since the age of 13. I truly know how it feels to not have your time valued and knows when it is time to move on to have your time allocated elsewhere. I have always aspired to be a great leader, role model, and overall positive influence to anyone I encountered. While completing my first year of college in 2011, I received my biggest blessing to date: I had my daughter Caeli, who has now flourished into a super smart eight year old. I took a year out of school to adapt and discover a new lifestyle for my daughter and I. In Spring 2012, I resumed my studies virtually and continued to pursue my degree in Psychology. By Fall 2012, I discovered that I had a passion for more than just the study of Psychology, I wanted to be more of an impact on individuals, especially in the early childhood years. This led me to change my major to Education, because I felt I would be able to make more of an impact working with the youth directly. I continued studying Education online and working 2-3 jobs in order to maintain my new lifestyle. I never knew that me aspiring to be a great leader and role model would transpire my being into an entrepreneurial status.

In 2012, I was working at the ATL Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport in Customer Service, and I was riding on the plane train brainstorming on how could I make a brand name that would correlate with my name, and educate others on how being beautiful from every aspect is beneficial. I started thinking of names like, “Be You”, “Be Blunt”, etcetera. Finally, I came up with “BeBeat Cosmetics” after thinking of this one statement that my closest friends studying at Morehouse College would say to me, “Britt, BeBeat sis!” In retrospect, as I cultivated my ideas, remembered their statement, then I realized that  “being beat or BeBeat” is everything you do—be amazing at everything you do!

By October 2013, BeBeat Cosmetics was created, and I started doing freelance makeup and individual cluster/strip lashes. I created a price list, social media, and started building my clientele. By Fall 2014, I was managing the spa at the OMNI Hotel in Atlanta, GA. I resigned from my position. Shortly afterwards, I started working in Education as an After-School Tutor in Decatur, GA, became an Enrichment Teacher for private schools in Buckhead Atlanta, resigned in 2016, became a Substitute Teacher for both Atlanta & Fulton County public school systems, and currently, a Mental Health Specialist at The Purpose Project (YMCA of Greater Atlanta) as well. At this point, I’m maintaining going to school full time, working full time, trying to build my brand, and a single parent. In retrospect, I bought lash extension equipment in June 2015 due to my aunt Sonya consistently telling me that I should learn to do eyelash extensions, and she went on to discuss how big of an industry beauty is and since I already have “BeBeat Cosmetics” established that I should get involved. By February 2016, I took a course and I learned to do lash extensions, created a booking and business website, practiced my skills on several colleagues and friends, and BeBeat Cosmetics took a major launch with a $50 special I created. I promoted via social media, word of mouth, family, and friends, and of course business cards. I started doing the lash extensions via travel services, and directly out of my home’s living room. From 2016-17, I serviced over 200 clients, mostly in my living room. Women would sit on the couch and wait patiently just to allow me to lift and beautify their eyes. It was truly a beautiful experience to take part in.

In January 2017, I leased my own space in East Atlanta Village and remained there for nine months. Following, I went on to lease another space with a former client of mine who mentioned in 2016 that she would like for me to partner in a spa that she would be opening soon. I stayed there operating business with her for six months. Then, I sought out to lease my own space with “BeBeat Cosmetics” clients only. After an amazing run, I left my friend’s space in May 2018 and transferred from an online school and I started attending school at Georgia State University in June 2018 studying Sociology while still serving as a traveling lash tech. Recently, this May of 2019, I graduated from Georgia State University, and am now undergoing a Masters Degree in Sociology with a concentration in Early Childhood Development.

Today, I see my business—my baby, “BeBeat Cosmetics” as very different and profound. My vision for BeBeat has plans for affects that will be “over the top” and state of the art to delight all of my patrons.” Still, I plan to open a “BeBeat Cosmetics” Spa. BeBeat Cosmetics’ Spa will become a “beauty heaven” for everyone that desires our many services.

As the CEO, I have become more of a social advocate, trainer, and coach for my business, “BeBeat Cosmetics.” I look forward to hosting seminars that I have created in order to cultivate the true meaning and my outlook on the definition of cosmetics under my business name. Just to give an overview: I hope to inspire various individuals globally to believe that in order for one to live [create] a “BeBeat” lifestyle, that, that lifestyle should include them creating their own definition of cosmetics for their mind, body, soul, and spirit. This will serve the purpose to improve their appearance mentally and physically. It is a must that we plan our time by taking notes accordingly to strategically place our minds, bodies, souls, spirits, and tasks in place. My new series of workshops will be entitled, “Behind the Foundation.” Please stay tuned!…

Overall, has it been relatively smooth? If not, what were some of the struggles along the way?
The journey with BeBeat Cosmetics has not been a smooth road. OMG, the biggest struggle along the way, and I believe for any business is reforming strategies and your creativity. “At every level, there is really a new devil…” as many would say or so I have heard. I believe that the biggest obstacle for me was accepting the reforms I had to make from a logical, creative, strategical, financial marketing, and spiritual perspective when it came to BeBeat Cosmetics. When God came knocking at the spiritual antennas of my thoughts to overturn BeBeat Cosmetics into more, I was devastated because I became comfortable in what I was doing. I had no clue or thought of what it is like going back to the drawing board in order to make it to the next level of my business and life. It was almost as if he forced me inside of my thoughts and finances to do more with BeBeat Cosmetics. Now, I am aware that levels of entrepreneurship are like a video game; every level gets tougher, and only the strong will survive by strategically planning in order to place our minds, bodies, souls, spirits, and tasks in place. That is how we get to our next levels here at BeBeat Cosmetics.

Wow, the role of good luck and bad luck… For me, the role good luck has played in my life and business is when I consistently think positive and have strong faith in everything that I encounter, that I will consistently have good luck. It has been imperative for me to recognize that every lesson comes in order to promote growth past the obstacles, and become better prepared at every new level. I believe the role bad luck has played in my life and business is that if I do not consistently delete all negative thoughts in my mind, energy, and surroundings that it would be a possibility that I could have bad luck and become closed minded, stagnant, and demise my life/business goals and aspirations.
