Today we’d like to introduce you to Brooks Harvard.
Brooks, please share your story with us. How did you get to where you are today?
My wife and I went to school at the University of Alabama. Unfortunately, in 2008, there were not, or it seemed like there were not a lot of career opportunities in Alabama… Go to law school, work for Regions bank, or get your masters and extend college for a few more years were the options my contemporaries were pursuing.
Having married my wife Lindsey right out of school I knew I need to start making money quickly! I started my career in Atlanta at an internet startup called Lamps and Screens Online. They were acquired by an AV distributor named Stampede Presentation Products and it was time for me to find my next opportunity.
That led me to N3, LLC. N3 was a great learning experience in that I was taught a lot about technology and software and hardware and was quickly promoted from their inside sales BDR team to their Business Development group. I was tasked with helping the company grow outside of primary customer and had great successes in closing deals with fortune 100 companies like Oracle, SAP, and Fujitsu for the company.
As N3 grew and looked to bring on outside money, my connection to the CEO became less and less as they structured the company for more institutional funding. Having met him and loved his passion and drive for sales I knew it was time for me to move on and through a recruiter met Doug Brown, Founder, and Owner of Brown Bag Marketing.
Doug is one of the best team leaders and coaches I have ever met and working for a marketing firm seemed a great next step in my outsourced sales/marketing career. The team atmosphere and a true work hard, play hard culture are both traits that I hope I have instilled in the company I run Range of Motion.
I was introduced through a networking dinner to the owners of Range of Motion. They had recently had a large liquidation event for a renewable trucking company they had started and been looking to refocus time and capital into Range of Motion, a durable medical equipment company. They knew that they were needing to make a change at the CEO level and despite my lack of experience believed in my drive and enthusiasm and gave me an opportunity to prove myself.
I can’t thank them enough as I know to get to work with a tremendous team of medical billers, service technicians, sales reps, and channel partners to serve some of the best and largest medical organizations in Georgia, including; Emory, Northside, Wellstar, Piedmont, Resurgeons, OthoAtlanta, Dekalb Medical, and many others.
Has it been a smooth road?
Getting into healthcare from a tech and marketing background was eye-opening and head poundingly difficult. In both Tech and Marketing innovation and opportunity are everywhere. Thinking outside of the box is not just encouraged but rather a requirement for growth and survival.
In healthcare, we are highly regulated reporting to numerous regulatory and credentialing bodies such as Medicare and The Joint Commission. Working within these regulatory boundaries while building a team with aggressive growth goals was challenging but untimely very rewarding.
Additionally having to focus our efforts on delivering world-class service to all the stakeholders in our service funnel; the doctors, their staff, the patient, and the insurance companies has resulted in a requirement to find employees who excel at organization, empathy, and timeliness, while understanding that we are a business that most collect on payments compassionately, envisioning every patient as if it was their family member.
We’d love to hear more about your business.
Range of Motion Inc is one of America’s largest nationally recognized mechanical DVT prophylaxis, post orthopedic bracing, and rehab equipment companies. Having a broad range of products and services used in rehabilitation, pain management, and physical therapy we are also uniquely positioned as a brand/product agnostic organization to deliver the best product for the patient, procedure, and desired outcome.
Is our city a good place to do what you do?
Atlanta is a great city to live in for healthcare professionals. There are many best in class facilities and hospitals and a large pool of talent.
DME (Durable Medical Equipment), in particular, is a great business to be in with our aging population and a push toward home healthcare. However, there are steep barriers to entry due to licensing requirements and the difficulty in acquiring in-network status with large healthcare insurance companies.
Anyone looking to start out in healthcare should look at acquisition opportunities where they can perhaps buy smaller providers out over time through an earn-out and use that period for learning and training.
Home Healthcare in Atlanta will continue to grow and whether it is DME, Home Health Rehab, Home Care, or Transporation, there are 100s of business models that run correctly can be very profitable in this city.
