Today we’d like to introduce you to Catherine Agati.
Every artist has a unique story. Can you briefly walk us through yours?
I grew up with a form of severe dyslexia. It branched off into dyscalculia and dysgraphia. I needed outlets, something to help me forget the struggle that had been placed in my life. It started with painting and drawing which then led to writing poetry/songs and then I started dabbling in photography. If it involved creativity, a way to express myself or work through my difficulties I would take an interest in it. I still love to write poetry, the occasional song or short story and drawing but film and photography have caught my interest more. I love capturing moments. I love telling stories that haven’t been told before.
Please tell us about your art.
I make many things. I don’t like to confine myself to one thing. I express myself through my short stories and poetry. Telling peoples stories that need to be told through journalism. Capturing moments and saying something meaningful through my photography. And sharing a tale of life through the documentary about the effect conventions have had on nerd culture and the people that proudly call themselves a nerd. I love to draw as well, truly anything that helps me express life, pain, happiness, confusion, anger, and change I take an interest in. But this ” interview” is focusing mainly on my photography. I will take either staged photos that tell a story, I adore fashion, and I believe it is one of the ultimate forms of self-expression and acceptance. I love to take photos of cosplay; it helps people show their love for a character. I love to capture the change in our world, the things that need to be changed. A lot can be said through the photos I captured at The March For Life. And then I just love to capture daily life and people not being staged. I like to tell stories, every photo I take tells one. I want people to feel that I want my creations to invoke the emotion of any kind, and I want them to invoke people to be moved to change things.
Do you have any advice for other artists? Any lessons you wished you learned earlier?
I wish I dived deeper before starting certain projects on how to do it. I know the documentary that we are coming out with will be good, but we made mistakes and did just jump in. So I say make sure you learn as much as you can. The major advice I give it never lie in your work and to always stay passionate.
How or where can people see your work? How can people support your work?
People can support me by going on my website (that will be up very soon) follow me on Instagram to see my most recent work and to find my website. And hopefully soon, sharing my writings and videos that will be published. And how people can majorly support my work is trusting me with their story. Whether it be a video talking about something important to them or through my photography. I believe in making an authentic and deprived of lies. It sounds silly when you see just my photos of cosplay, but there is beautiful authenticity there as well. Trust me with your story, whatever it may be, and I will make it beautiful.
